Chapter 10 - The Mirror's edge

A little birdie told me someone's been missing their daily dose of our twenty girls, so I'm here to prescribe another one, only this time, stronger.

You can't blame a snake for shedding its skin, and that truth applies to each and every one of you, my babies.

Don't force change on others. Don't even ask for it in yourselves. Let nature take its course.

When I said the world is a mirror before? I meant it. Sorry if I left out one crucial detail: it's a shattered mirror.

I know that's not a fun way to start our story, but my baby just took drastic measures against life.

You see, our dearest Veronica overdosed. It's a shock to everyone truly because, she was fine just the other day.

And I was careless as her mother. I focused too much on the gossip and the screaming, forgetting that some pain doesn't come dressed in sadness. Some choices are numb...

And some sadness are just felt suddenly and intensely.

Vicky was the first to notice that something was wrong. That was after she had taken MG from the kitchen and suggested the rooftop to discuss things further passing Jessica along the way while talking about money. Bad decision, I know.

And also they chose the rooftop because, no one goes there anymore. Not after Cheryl tried to throw herself off it some time before.

Sometimes I wish I didn't care this much. Sometimes I wish I could forget. I'm getting emotional—I know—but I have a job to do and a promise to keep.

So, there they were, headed to the rooftop, when Vicky noticed Veronica's door slightly ajar. That alone should've been a red flag. But MG didn't think much of it.

"Veronica is home?" Vicky asked, slowing down.

"I guess. I'm not sure when she got back though " MG replied, already walking away,

"As I was saying… Some tenants are getting lazy and leech-ish… What are you doing?" Asked MG when she noticed that she was alone and her partner was ten feet behind on Veronica's door still.

She didn't reply… Vicky's gut shouted louder than her manners, and she did something wildly out of character—she pushed the door open. MG froze for a second. Vicky? Breaking privacy rules?

"There's something wrong, MG," she said as she tiptoed inside followed by a reluctant MG.

"No shit! We just snuck into Vero's room… uninvited!" MG whispered loudly, knocking something over. She's hopeless in the dark.

"Vero?" Vicky called out, reaching the bed. Her hand brushed a body. Cold… damp… I'm no doctor, but something was very, very wrong.

The scream that followed might've come from me—I honestly can't tell anymore. All I know is MG heard it and sprang into action.

And in seconds, she had Vero on her back, racing for the stairs. Two floors down. No elevator. A barely breathing girl on her back. MG became a soldier that night. Barking orders left and right.

Gravel agreed to drive them to the hospital, even though—plot twist!—she doesn't have a license.

She's at the police station now with some of the girls, while the rest stayed with Veronica. Quite a lot for one day, huh?

But that's just another Tuesday at our favorite residence, right here on Paradise Street. Until next time… I've got police officers to charm and doctors to beg.

Your host for the night,

Mother Nature.
