Chapter 13 - Let it burn

About time you got here!

You didn't miss much—just a few hairs here and there… sharp as always, I'd say.

What do you say? Should we head inside our story? Great.

Sonia was the one there when Veronica woke up, calling for MG, which made Sonia chuckle—subconsciously, of course. She couldn't fake a charming personality even if she tried.

I mean, let's face it—some people are just natural magnets. Everything and everyone gravitates toward them. That's MG. And as much as Sonia trusts me, sometimes I think… she wants to be me.

Well, that was a buzzkill. Moving on.

Sonia stepped into Veronica's view with her usual happy mask on.

And yes, I know—it hurts me too. She's hurting over something so little, something most people take for granted: to be needed, just once.

"Hey there, big girl," Sonia greeted, genuinely worried. "Need anything? Water?"

She helped lift Vero's head and tucked some pillows behind her to keep her elevated.

They weren't talkers, those two. So the room wasn't awkward—just quiet.

"I'm sorry," Veronica said after sipping her water. She knows.

Sonia pretended not to hear and quietly stepped out to call the doctor.

After a few tests and routine procedures, Veronica was allowed to go home—but not without a mandatory psychiatrist appointment.

It had been a long night.

And every one of my girls? They learned something from it: family sticks together, even through the muddiest holes.

Fiona, for one, had gone completely silent. Rightly so.

It got to the point where MG called her into the kitchen just to check in.

"What?" Fiona asked flatly. Not one for small talk, and honestly, I respect that.

"Yesterday…" MG started, fumbling for the words.

"I'm fine, MG. I'd never end up like Veronica. That's the furthest thing from my mind right now," Fiona assured.

But it didn't do the trick.

"What exactly happened?" MG asked—not the smoothest approach, but trust me, she cares.

"How is my life any of your business?" Fiona snapped, and the mix of guilt and regret froze MG in place.

"You're right, Fiona. It's not!" MG yelled, fists clenched. The only thing she could do not to shake her by the shoulders.

"But we are family here! And I know you've got your shit together—hell, out of everyone, you've lasted on a job for seven months straight! But can't you just let us in when you're hurting? Let's talk it out. Lash at someone. Kidnap a boss or two…"

(That one made Fiona crack a smile.)

"Anything! But I refuse to go through this again."

What they didn't know was that the other tenants were listening, huddled silently just outside.

And when Gravel couldn't take seeing her girl like that anymore, she moved to bring MG to her room.

"MG? I think you need sleep," Gravel said, holding her shoulders.

"Oh, Gravel…" MG whimpered, too exhausted to even resist.

"I quit my job," Fiona suddenly announced—loudly enough for the whole house to hear.

I swear, even the windows were stunned.

Humans and their problems, am I right? But there's always hope.

Or, as I like to call her, luck's little nasty bitch.

We've got a trial brewing with the lady luck herself right now, so I won't dip my toes into that just yet…

PS:

How do you summon audacity?

I should ask Joy?. You may be right. I'll get on to it.

Don't miss me too much.

With love,

Mother Nature
