Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: The Rift

"Hey! Did you see the girl who applied for the job?" I ask while sitting down next to Zack in the lunchroom, giving him a playful slap on the back of the head.

My name is Leonidas. My father has always been obsessed with ancient Greek history, so he decided to name me after his favorite Spartan king, not at all considering if it would fit in with modern society.

Luckily, everyone just ended up calling me Leo.

"Come on Leo, get real," Zack says before raising a strip of bacon to his mouth. "The girl's name is Gina, and my friend—she's way out of your league!"

Zachary is my best friend, I love the guy, but his honesty is brutal sometimes.

We've known each other since kindergarten. We're quite different, in both looks and personality, but hanging out with him has never once gotten me bored.

He has medium-length black hair, blue eyes, pale skin, and he's not exactly what you'd call muscular.

We act like brothers, but with our differences in appearance, we couldn't have fooled anyone.

My hair length is about the same as Zack's, but it's hazel brown and curly. I have green eyes, and having been trained in the art of boxing for a few years, my build is somewhat athletic.

"Geeh, thanks man. Well, I know you dig me, so why wouldn't she?" I ask with a cocky smirk.

He chuckles, before biting into his bacon, "I only love you because you're my bro, and you'll always be at my level! You and me, we're going to rock this joint together until we're retiring!"

"As if!" I grab my chicken sandwich and take a bite, "We're only 19 years old, why would we already settle for a job selling computers?"

Zack stares into my eyes, his expression suddenly serious. "Videogames, beer, pizza..." He leans back in his chair and raise his arms like a leader holding a speech. "Everything we've ever wanted—within our reach with every salary!"

I laugh heartily. "We're not kids anymore, we've gotta plan our future. I'm only here until next semester, I'm going to study theoretical physics after the coming summer, join me Zack!"

He only tsks. "Is not this, my kingdom—'Zack's computers'..." he waves his hand, gesturing toward the entire store, "good enough for you! This could all be ours!"

I chuckle while shaking my head. "Careful there, oh great one! Bob, the owner of BOB's computers, might start to suspect you're planning a coup!"

"Nah, he'll retire in a few years, it'll be mine eventually." Zack says nonchalantly.

"Zack... I'm serious! You're smart enough, join me! Live with your dad for a while longer, you'll afford the school if you work part-time."

He shrugs, but seems to not really be content with his decision. "Maybe later... Right now, I can't wait to move out and have a place to myself."

I go for another bite of my chicken sandwich, "if you say so," I reply. Zack wasn't stupid at all, but he was kinda lazy, maybe all he lacked was the proper motivation.

Zack starts to grin. "Hey, want to see something hilarious?!"

I sigh. "What?" a bit afraid that this might be another of his shenanigans.

"An older lady brought in a computer for repair this morning," Zack says before chuckling, "and it's absolutely filled with porn!"

"Her son's, no doubt..." I reply, shrugging my shoulders, not really interested.

"Indeed," Zach continues, "but I've never seen this amount stored on one computer! Follow me, I'll show you!"

He gets up, walking over to the back room door, where our repair station is located.

"Zach, I've seen people having porn before, I'm not interested in spending my short lunch-break on checking out some guy's gigabytes of porn."

Zack's grin widens, "it's not gigabytes..."

My eyes widens, "it can't be?..."

"It is!" Zack laughs, "Terabytes... Sorted by genre—animated, 3D, furry, milfs..." he faux wipes a tear from his eyes, "it's almost beautiful."

I burst out laughing. "Now you're starting to sound like a creep, Zack!"

"Just come, you'll see." He says, opening the door to the back room, holding it open.

I sigh, knowing that he won't take no for an answer. "Fine..."

We both head to the back room, and surely, there is a stationary computer hooked up to the desk where we do our repairs.

"Behold..." Zack says dramatically, while walking over to it—turning it on.

Bzzzt...

There's an electric buzzing sound coming from every corner of the room, and the lights starts to flicker as the computer starts up.

"What was that?..." I mutter, curious about the phenomenon.

Zack chuckles. "The computer is probably drawing too much power. I told you, it's crazy full!"

"No, there's no way that was the compu—"

BZZZT!!!

The lights suddenly flicker bright and violently, and the electric buzzing noise grows painfully loud, the entire room begins to tremble.

We both instinctively clamp our hands over our ears.

"WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING?!" Zack yells, his voice barely audible over the chaos.

Just a short moment after, everything calms down, just a faint buzzing remains.

Right before us, a glowing tear floats, as if there is a rift in reality itself.

Suspended in midair, pulsing with purple light, arcs of energy crackle gently around the edges of the open rift.

"What the hell is that?..." Zach murmurs, stepping closer to it.

"Careful! We don't know what it is!..." I say as I gaze at it in wonder. It doesn't feel anywhere near as powerful and dangerous as it just did, but still—there is no explanation for what we're seeing.

"Don't worry..." Zack says, as he reaches a hand out to touch it.

I step in closer and grab his arm, stopping him. "Don't, it could be danger—"

As I was about to warn him, a purple lightning in the shape of an arm jumps out from the rift and hits us.

Crack!

Everything turns white, electricity surges through my body, numbing every sense! My thoughts are emptied, and a figure appears before my eyes, its form hard to make out. But it's very bright, and perhaps... feminine?

Intense blue eyes stare back at me, and the words "Release me" fills my mind—more commanding than pleading.

Every cell in my body screamed at me, the burning desire of this being was palpable: destruction.

Its will tries to force its way into my mind, trying to take over, but I resist with all my strength.

"Very well," a voice says, very female and very powerful, "you're strong... maybe a gift will suade you!"

My eyes starts to burn, and the light around me fades to darkness, along with all sound.

I try to scream out because of the pain, and press my palms against my eyes.

After a short moment, the pain fades away, as if it had never even been there.

And a brief instant later, my sight and hearing comes back slowly, both blurry at first, but well enough to tell that it's night, and that we're outside.

There's a humming noise surrounding us, and a cold breeze is blowing.

As sight and hearing comes back fully, so did something else—a craving to fight arose within me.

When my vision was fully regained, I see that we're standing on top of a cliff, and a purple glowing circle is drawn at the ground, surrounding us.

Five robed figures are down on their knees, surrounding the circle, with palms pressed against the edges of it, as if they're the ones making it glow.

The robed figures themselves seems to radiate some kind of blue light or fire, but it's calm and doesn't seem to harm them.

My eyes widens, "what's going on here?!..." I murmur, while turning my head toward Zack. What I see makes chills run down my spine.

He's standing still, frozen like a statue. His eyes are white, and his expression is empty. He is also radiating the strange calm fire, but his is not blue, but golden!

Some small writing is hovering over him. It becomes clearer as I narrow my eyes, focusing on it. "'Level 200. Class: Deity'?!!" I blurt out.

"Hey, look! Someone came out!" One of the robed men shouts, pointing at us.

I grab Zack and try to shake him, but it's impossible to move him an inch—now he really resembles a statue!

"Hey, man! Snap the hell out of it! We've got to get out of here!" I shout at him, my voice shaky.

"Not so fast, young man..." One of the robed men says in a deep voice.

He slowly gets up and starts walking toward us. His hood shadows most of his face, but piercing blue eyes can be seen beneath it, they seem to have a faint glow to them...

He himself also radiates calm blue flames, but his seems more powerful, and is tinged with a red hue.

He approaches us with slow, decisive steps.

"Shit!... What do I do?!" I mutter to myself, wanting to escape, but not wanting to leave my best friend!

Instinctively, I jump in front of Zack, shielding him while shouting ."BACK OFF!"

He stops just a few feet from us, chuckling.

He also has writing hovering above him. 'Level 120. Class: Archmage'.

"Did she send you?" He asks calmly, his voice non-threatening.

"Sorry?..." I ask, having no clue what he's on about.

Before he can clarify, Zack speaks up. "You need more magicka. Much more!"

It was Zack's mouth that spoke, but the voice wasn't his, it was deep and dark, and female...

The robed figure grins widely, and then proceeds to bow deeply. "Aahh... It shall be done!"

Zack gives a brief nod, before his white eyes slowly fade, shifting back to their usual blue, or maybe even a bit brighter than they used to be...

The robed figure stands up straight again, clearing his throat. "Kill the loud one, spare the other—he's our guest."

He turns to leave, leaving his dirty work to his underlings.

"Yes, Master," the other four robed figures answer in unison. They all rise, magical energy already swirling around their hands, some crackling with lightning, others burning with fire or shimmering with frost.

"Leo!!" Zack shouts, before shoving us both over the edge of the cliff.

We tumble, gravity slamming us against the stony slope as we roll uncontrollably downhill, over and over again.

Luckily, the edge wasn't a sheer drop down, but it was steep. Too treacherous for anyone to follow willingly.

"Down the path, quickly!" Someone commands from the edge of the cliff, "don't let them get away!"

Our tumbling finally stops as we crash into the soft, grassy ground beneath the cliff.

"Damn... that hurt." I groan.

We only had a small head start, the mages or whatever they were, had to get down to us using a safer route.

"Zack, get up! We need to run!" I command while getting up.

There is no answer.

Quickly turning my attention toward him, I see that he's unconscious.

"Shit!"

I hurry over to him and throw him over my shoulders, "damn I'm glad you're skinny!"

With all the force I could muster, I ran.
