Chapter 2 - Cursed by Day, Blessed by Night

Why, why is there no moon? Nameless asked himself.

Before he could think more about the absent moon, Nameless heard a chilling, high pitched monster roar.

He instinctually turned his head to his right where the roar came from.

There, on the top of a building, stood a true monster.

It stood at 15-20 metres when it came to height, and about 1-5 meters when it came to breadth. It was pretty skinny.

The monster had 4 limbs, each used for walking, or perhaps climbing. The monster's limbs were covered in blood, especially at the ends where its claws were.

The most noticeable feature was the monster's mouth. It was stretched out as a pole, making it stick out, especially its sharp yellow teeth. The monster had no eyes. As for its nose, the nameless had no idea where it was, but it reminded him eerily of those possessed dogs you would only see in horror movies.

Only, this one was a lot bigger.

In colour, the monsters had a tone of dark purple, while in the night, one could mistake it as black.

To tNameless' horror, the monster 'sniffed' the air and turned it's attention to him.

Nameless' eyes widened in shock and fear.

There was a moment of silence as both he and the monster stared at each other.

To Nameless, there was no silence, as the repeating beats of his heart made it hard for him to determine whether or not the monster had produced any other sounds.

C…can it, see m..me? The nameless thought in fear.

It was a wonder how the monster noticed his presence from so far away, the monster was not close to nameless.

He stared for a moment. Then his foot slid back. Then the another.

Step by step, he retreated, quite as he could, like even the sound of breath might snap the air.

His throat tightened.

The creature didn't move.

That somehow made it worse.

Nameless didn't wait another moment and quickly turned around and ran.

Ever so often, he would look behind him to see if the monster was following him, but he would always find that the monster was only silently 'observing' him.

After he had covered some distance, the monster diverted its attention.

But Nameless didn't want to be absolutely sure so he ran into an alleyway to hide.

Haaa, Haaa panting, nameless sat down to get some rest.

As the sweat trickled down his face, Nameless gradually calmed down.

From what I've observed, that monster doesn't seem to be interested in me. He thought as he tried to collect himself.

"You're quite the lucky one aren't you?"

Nameless turned his head to where he had heard the foreign voice.

It was an old man. The old man had a head full of grey hair. His wrinkled face told much more about his long life than his hair.

A brutal scar ran down from his temple down to his left cheek.

He had an unusually impressive build for an old man. 180 or 185 cm in length with broad shoulders.

"Easy there boy, I don't mean any harm." The old man, noticing that Nameless had tensed up, raised both of his hands to show that he didn't mean any harm.

The old man reached for something in his pocket.

Nameless' eyes widened, they showed a bit of fear.

The old man was well aware of nameless' fear, he slowed down all of his actions and slowly pulled out a small flashlight.

He turned it on and pointed it on his hand, his hand casted a shadow in response.

"See? I also have a shadow." The old man gave a gentle smile.

Nameless was puzzled by what the man meant but he eased up a little seeing that the man didn't seem to have any ill intentions.

"My name is Rodrig. I came here because I forgot an important thing that needed to be urgently retrieved." The old man, Rodrig, introduced himself.

"Do you mind telling me your name?" The old man, still caring for his gentle smile, asked Nameless for his name.

This old man is talking to me as if I'm some child. I do have the appearances of one though, I might even be one.

"My name is…my name is…"

What was my name again? Nameless tried to recall his name but found that he couldn't. It was blanc.

Nameless' anxiety mounted rapidly.

W..why can't I remember my name? What happened? Is it because of that man? Nameless' thought ran wild as his anxiety started to effect his thinking.

Seeing the struggle Nameless had with answering, Rodrig seemed to understand what was going on though and shook his head.

"I see, so you are a nameless?"

Nameless' mind stop churning as he heard Rodrigs answer.

"A nameless?" he asked.

"Yes."

"What…what is a Nameless?"

A sudden silence overcame them both as Rodrig's expression changed to that of confusion but to quickly returned to normal.

"I see, I heard that some nameless might even forget about themselves and the world, living in their own, separate world." He said out loud, more to himself than nameless as he scratched his gray stubble.

"You are a nameless, meaning that you don't have a name, or will ever have one." Rodrig explained.

"What?" Nameless couldn't help but blurt out his confusion.

"It'll be easier if you go to the nearest enforcer center to get an explanation. It's also safer there than anywhere else for the moment." Rodrig paused for a moment before muttering "For me at least"

"…Okay. Where can I find the nearest enforcer center?" Nameless asked, not hearing what Rodrig said under his breathe.

"I can guide you there, it's not far away from here"

Nameless simply gave a nod.

For him, it was better to follow this stranger than be eaten by that monster.

*

Rodrig led Nameless to a 3 story building. The building was filled with neon lights. And one big sign that said "Gargen Enforcer Center".

Gargen must be this city's name Nameless mused.

Once Rodrig and Nameless approached the entrance, the doors turned into a shade of transparent blue.

Rodrig didn't seem to be bothered as he simply walked through. Nameless followed suit, granted, he was a bit more cautious than Rodrig.

Inside, the whole building was painted blue with some blue lines on the walls.

A man with a cloak uniform of the same colors greeted them both.

"Welcome, would you like to report something or seek protection?"

"This guy here is a nameless, he's forgotten a lot of things and needs protection for a little while." Rodrig explain as he pointed at Nameless with his thumb.

"Oh, a nameless? Haven't seen one in a while. Welcome in, go to the left and ask the receptionist there." The man instructed.

Nameless gave a nod and did as instructed.

"Was your mission successful?" Nameless heard the man ask Rodrig before walking away.

Soon, a female receptionist with the same uniform as the man before came into sight, granted, her uniform was one for females.

"Hello, what do you need help with?" The woman asked with a professional smile.

Nameless quickly informed her of his situation. However, he omitted the part about his transmigration and the necklace.

"Ah, I see. You can stake a seat. This will take a while to explain."

***

After a while, Nameless finally got the jist of his and the world's situations.

"Thanks again" he thanked the receptionist before finding an empty waiting room and sat down.

A sigh escaped his mouth as he did so.

I'm fucked beyond words he thought as he massaged his temples.

He collected himself before going over what the receptionist told him.

The nameless are a group of people that are not born with names. Hence the name, 'nameless'. But that's not all, the nameless are also "cursed by the day and blessed by the night" as the receptionist said.

This wouldn't make sense if you didn't know the creation story of this world. And it is a long one.

It started out with 2 Gods. The God of day and The God of night. As their name suggests, they both ruled the night and day respectively. But one day, they clashed. And a huge fight erupted.

In the fight, both parties sustained damage. It's said that the God of day's right eye fell out of its socket and became the sun. While the God of Night's hair became the stars.

Both of their blood became the sea, their flesh the land. The rest was also created from their body parts.

And so, after their fight, both of them decided to calm down and produce their own children.

Out of their children, 2 fell in love and had 2 children. Dawn and Dusk.

Both Gods were of course not glad to have their children have children with their arch enemies but that's a story for another time.

The main point here is their other children. Through the children of day came the creatures of the day. And thought the children of night came the creatures of the night.

An example was the monster that nameless had encountered. It was a creature of the night.

As one may have guessed, they only appear in the night and vice versa.

Humanity came from dawn and dusk.

The nameless are from a special lineage where humans are speculated to have intermingled with night creatures(creatures of the night).

Resulting in the nameless, a race of humans that have to hide during the day and can only walk during the night.

In other words, I just got transmigrated into a pseudo vampire child. Nameless thought with a sigh

This body is 15, not far from my actual age, 19, but it's still a bit disappointing. He grunted.

"Ah, there you are, been looking for you all over." A voice pulled Nameless out of his thoughts.
