He finally wrapped up his conversation and headed toward the car.
Diana was so lost in thought she didn't even hear the door open—and only snapped back when it closed shut.
Jacob couldn't hold it in any longer.
_"Diana?"
"Is something bothering you? You've looked distant this whole time."
"If there's anything going on, you can tell me. I promise I'll help however I can."
She finally looked up and met his eyes.
He could see it—stress, sadness, confusion—all tangled up in her gaze.
Her smile came with a tightness in her throat.
-"Come on... you don't even know me that well. What makes you so sure?
Maybe I'm one of your... I don't know, enemies or something?
Ever think about that?"
Jacob chuckled softly as he fastened his seatbelt.
_"Well, if that's the case, I should probably start doubting myself."
Seeing the confused look on her face, he added,
_"Don't overthink so much…"
-"I'm not stupid, you know?"
_"Yeah… I know."
-"Is he coming?"
He knew exactly who she meant—but asked anyway.
_"Who?"
Diana rolled her eyes.
-"That guy… the guy… ugh."
-"Matthew."
_"No… that guy… that man… ah. Matthew's not coming."
-"Not even to my house?"
_"Nope. Not even to your house."
