"Brother Hayes," Lucas said, his voice carrying newfound warmth as he placed a firm hand on my shoulder. "You saved my life today. I can't let you leave empty-handed."
I shook my head. "Governor Vance, I told you. I don't need payment."
"Lucas," he corrected with a smile. "And it's not about need. It's about respect. You've shown me something incredible today, and I want to build a proper relationship with you."
Dr. Blaine stepped forward, his earlier skepticism completely gone. "Mr. Hayes, I meant what I said about learning from you. Would you consider taking me as your disciple?"
The formal request surprised me. In the traditional world, asking to become someone's disciple was a serious commitment.
"That's not a decision I make lightly," I said. "True medical cultivation requires complete dedication."
"I understand," Dr. Blaine said, bowing slightly. "I'm prepared for whatever training you deem necessary."
