Chapter 19 - Chapter 19 Rescue

"Hey."

A deep voice came from the other end of the phone.

"Nick Fury, it's me—Clark. I want to know who kidnapped my mother. Since you had Tony contact me, you must already know someone's planning an attack on me."

Fury was surprised to hear Clark's mother had been kidnapped. He had only meant for Tony to notify Clark, hoping it would push him toward cooperating with S.H.I.E.L.D.

"I want to know who did this. Where is my mother?"

"I'll help you find her location, but I can't tell you who gave the order to abduct her."

Clark was silent for a moment. Then he said calmly:

"If you won't tell me, I guess I'll have to ask the president directly at the White House.

They want to come after me—not because I'm different and they fear me, but because they crave power like mine. That, I understand.

But as long as everyone plays by the rules, I don't mind playing along. This time, though, they bent the rules a little—so they can't blame me for what happens next."**

Fury didn't know what to say. Should he try to reason with Clark? Tell him "we're doing this for your own good"? He couldn't even bring himself to say the words.

But if he told Clark who ordered the kidnapping, he feared Clark might go straight after them. And facing someone like Clark without preparation was practically suicide.

"I'm already on the White House roof."

"Clark, don't do anything reckless!"

"I didn't start this. You did. I consider myself a law-abiding citizen. I've never broken the law.

Enough talk. I'll count to three. If I don't get an answer, I'm going to have a word with our president."**

Clark was frustrated. Time was ticking, and Fury still refused to give a name. So he decided—if Fury didn't speak by the count of three, he was going straight to the top.

"One... Two..."

"Wait! I'll tell you—it was Senator Stern. We've also found your mother's location. She's on a helicopter heading toward Washington."

Under pressure, Fury finally gave in and revealed that Senator Stern had ordered the abduction. Clark didn't wait to hear anything more—he hung up the phone.

Fury stared at the dead line for a moment, then made another call.

Now knowing where his mother was, Clark blasted into the sky, leaving behind a supersonic cloud trail that immediately alerted people inside the White House that something fast was above them.

A minute later, Clark appeared over Washington. Scanning the area, he quickly located the helicopter carrying his mother.

Through the metal plating, he saw that his mother hadn't been harmed. Clark let out a quiet sigh of relief.

"Something's coming toward us—fast!"The helicopter's co-pilot looked down and noticed a red dot rapidly approaching on radar.

But before he could say anything else, Clark ripped open the helicopter's door.

Thankfully, the chopper wasn't flying too high. Otherwise, opening the door like that could've caused decompression strong enough to suck everyone out.

"Mom, I'm here!"

Clark entered the helicopter and calmly approached Mary. He ignored the men aiming guns at him and tore off her handcuffs with his bare hands.

"I'm taking you home."

As he was about to leave with Mary, one soldier shouted:

"Sir, I don't think you can take her. Move again and we'll shoot her!"

"Really?"

Clark turned to face them, a smirk forming on his lips.

"Fire!"

The lead soldier suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. Something about Clark's smile made his whole body tense up in fear. But he still gave the order to shoot.

Of course, Clark wouldn't allow that. In such a cramped space, even a stray bullet could injure Mary. So just as they were about to fire, Clark used his heat vision to destroy all of their guns—and some of their hands.

If Mary hadn't been present, Clark might've sliced them all in half just to avoid unnecessary bloodshed.

Just as Clark neutralized the threat inside the chopper, his expression changed.

He heard something rapidly approaching from a distance.

"That's a missile!"

The thought flashed through his mind. Without hesitation, he grabbed Mary and flew out of the helicopter.

BOOM!!

Just as they escaped, a missile struck the chopper, blowing it apart midair.

Moments later, Clark spotted several F-22 fighter jets heading toward him. Once they got close, they all launched missiles at him.

Clark activated his heat vision and detonated all the missiles in midair. These sub-Mach 1 speed missiles had no chance of hitting him. If he wasn't carrying Mary, he could've just caught them and thrown them back.

Realizing their missiles were ineffective, the fighters stopped launching them and switched to using their onboard cannons to harass and distract Clark from a distance.

Though Clark could fight back with his heat vision, at long range its power was limited. And with Mary in his arms, he didn't dare accelerate freely or lower her to the ground.

This battle had Clark completely constrained. He couldn't move the way he wanted.

So, he decided to fly toward Los Angeles. Right now, the only person he could rely on was Tony.

As long as Mary was safe, Clark could return and obliterate the jets himself. He didn't yet know what their endgame was, but once they were dead, it wouldn't matter.

As Clark carried Mary through the skies toward Los Angeles, he spotted a figure in the distance.

"Oh crap—it's Iron Man!"One of the jet pilots shouted when he saw the familiar shape in the sky.

"Are you ready? Tony Stark's here. If he sides with Superman, we're finished."The pilot opened his comms and relayed the warning.

"Come on, Diggle. Try to hold them off a little longer."A calm voice replied on the other end of the comms.

Hearing this, the squad leader, Diggle, clenched his jaw and switched channels.

"Hang in there—won't be long now. Cut off one head, two more shall take its place."

And across the comms came the synchronized response:

"Cut off one head, two shall take its place…"
