Chapter 8 - Family (short)

"Did you know a large majority of the population has stopped the thought of having kids?" Sunny looked up at Nephis, who was currently reading a news article. She's been on her phone, exploring everything she missed while she was stuck in the dream realm. Sadly... that included his mongrel persona, which he has still yet to tell her that it's him. Though maybe he could take it to the grave—after all, does it really matter?

"It makes sense, doesn't it? Nightmare gates are just getting worse each year."

Currently, he wasn't doing much, just enjoying the view. Although he wasn't looking out a window—no, he's just been looking at Nephis. She turned her head to look at him before looking back down onto her cellular device, or so she calls it.

"I can't help but agree with them."

In all honesty, he wasn't that surprised—after all, he couldn't really imagine her being a mother, although picturing it was nice when a certain handsome and extremely intelligent man was next to her. Brushing his fantasies aside, he couldn't help but agree with them as well.

"Maybe one day, when the world gets better—if that day ever comes, of course."

Of course, the thought of a family was nice, but in this day and age? After all, he could barely protect himself from the perils that follow him—how could he protect children who cannot even defend themselves?

"Say the world does get better—would you really settle down and have a family?"

In all honesty, while he has thought about the future, it wasn't up to that extent. But if he were to truly think on it...

"Perhaps I would, though I would settle down myself first. Starting my own memory shop... of course, if the spell existed in that possible future."

It seems that satiated her curiosity. Honestly, she was qui—

"Then if that future happens, who would you have kids with?"

Startled, he almost fell off the couch. He just now realized he was peering over to look at her during their talk. There was, of course, one person who came to mind—but he couldn't say that. Not now and not anytime soon... that would be in a perfect reality, of course, where he didn't have this accursed flaw. His mind was racing, and his flaw was clawing for the words to escape his throat. He couldn't figure out any way to word this without giving the truth.

"You... it would be you."

The silence was deafening. It was as if the sound was sucked out of the room, leaving nothing but his own thoughts.

"But of—" he couldn't finish his sentence. After all, how could he when she was smiling at him?

---

It's been about a week since then... and it's eating him alive. What did that smile mean? Did she feel the same? Was she just being polite? Did she think he was joking? He was able to cross out the last option, at least—after all, she knew his flaw. Though that was the second-best option out of them all.

She hasn't acted weird at all. It's just as normal as you can get living together after almost killing each other, and then becoming a slave to the other, and then being forced to leave them behind... he could really keep going.

It's even more awkward because right now they're watching a movie that happens to be about a master who fell in love with an Awakened in the midst of war and ended up getting pregnant. Now having to struggle balancing their duties for the world and the duties they have for their child—it's a slice-of-life movie, though the protagonist is quite raunchy.

"I wonder how it feels..."

He looked at her, confused. After all, while she has been making comments throughout the movie like always, the tone was different with this.

"I already told you, didn't I? That I wanted to destroy the nightmare spell."

He was brought back to the moment during the Forgotten Shore. He still thinks her dream is far too grand for a human, though since it's her, he's sure she can make it work somehow—plus, she has him as well.

"You did. What about it?"

At this point, the movie was irrelevant. This may be the time he can see what she thought of his answer that week.

"Once I... we make that come true, then..."

---

This whole week has been amazing—her words spinning around in his head the whole time. He still has so much he has to prepare, though. He needs to slave Aiko away for Sunny's Brilliant Emporium... though slave wasn't the best choice of word. Then he needed to simply destroy the thing that tormented his world for decades.

But it would all be worth it. After all, the words he heard that last night were sweet enough to make him wage wars against the dead gods themselves...

"Will you start a family with me?"
