Chapter Twenty-Nine: Fights in the Mansion

The silence after Maxx's voice was louder than any scream.
Reign turned to look at him. His jaw looked tense, his hands curled into fists at his sides.
He didn't blink or change his emotions. But something passed through his eyes the second he saw Maxx standing in the doorway like he belonged there.
Maxx raised one eyebrow, stepping inside casually, ignoring the weird energy in the room like it was a soft breeze.
"Why's everyone standing like there's been a murder?" His voice was light, playful, but his eyes were on alert.
Maxx looked around, noticed the servants stiff as statues, the nanny shaking, and Reign in the center like a lion pacing the edge of his cage.
Reign's voice came out quiet and heavy. "What the hell are you doing here?"
Maxx crossed the floor without answering. His boots clicked once on the marble, then softened on the rug. "Violet told me what happened. The twins. Isabelle. Everything. So I came."
