As the energy from Clark's body intensified, so did his strength and speed. At first, the Phoenix, in its fiery form, was able to keep up, but soon, it couldn't match his terrifying speed.
Every second, Clark's rapid movements tore the Phoenix's body apart. Although it would instantly regenerate, the energy making up the fiery bird was steadily dwindling, and the human form of Jean Grey inside was becoming more and more exposed.
"This is amazing. Your body is incredible!" A hint of excitement entered the Phoenix's fiery eyes. It looked at Clark with a new fanaticism. "I knew it! Every being from another world has its own unique value!"
With that, the Phoenix spread its wings and dropped all defenses, revealing Jean at the heart of the flames. "Don't you want to free this woman from me? Then come on and save her!"
Clark saw through the Phoenix's strange behavior, but he had no choice. His entire goal had been to safely separate Jean from the Phoenix Force. He couldn't hesitate now. In a flash, Clark flew straight through the Phoenix's chest and pulled Jean out. Behind him, the Phoenix Force, now without a host, slowly dispersed into the universe as pure energy.
"C-Clark?" Jean slowly opened her eyes. The remaining Phoenix energy on her body allowed her to survive in the vacuum of space, but her face quickly turned to horror. She pushed hard against Clark's chest. "Get away from me, Clark! The Phoenix's plan is..."
She was cut off as the raw, original power of the Phoenix Force surged from her eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, rushing directly at Clark.
"Jean, you're going to be okay," Clark said calmly, standing his ground. He knew he couldn't dodge. The only way to safely separate Jean from the Phoenix was for the Phoenix to choose to leave on its own. And for a host as suitable as Jean, that would never happen, unless someone even more suitable was nearby and unprotected. That person was Clark himself.
He embodied a miracle from another world and the hope of humanity. A superhuman with immense vitality and an unbreakable spirit, he was the perfect new host for the Phoenix. This had been his plan all along.
The Phoenix energy that erupted from Jean's body rushed into Clark. Instantly, its power spread to every part of his being, attempting to seize control of his mind and body.
"Jean... activate the shield. You can do it nowā¦" Clark grimaced in pain, but he managed to get the words out before pushing her toward Earth and flying into the sun alone.
Back on Earth
The battle between Superman and the Phoenix had ended, and some time had passed. The X-Men had boarded their jet and were on their way back to Westchester.
"Is there really nothing we can do to help Clark?" Logan asked, still frustrated.
Neither Ororo nor Scott had an answer, and everyone looked at Hank, the X-Men's most brilliant scientist.
"I'm sorry, Logan. If I had two months, with Clark's help, I might be able to build a ship that could break through the atmosphere. But right now, we have no way to get into space to help him. Even you would die out there." Logan's only indestructible parts were his bones. His body would still explode in a vacuum.
"Damn it! So we're just useless?" They had all seen how outmatched they were. In a battle they couldn't even bear to watch, Clark had still managed to protect everyone. The X-Men had only managed to calm and evacuate people, playing a supporting role while Clark did the real hero work.
"Instead of dwelling on this, why don't you all look up?" Eric, who had been taken to the school after the battle, now awake and speaking as a normal person, suddenly said.
Everyone looked up, and saw Jean falling through the atmosphere.
"Is that⦠Jean?"
With a loud crash, Jean hit the ground, shaking the entire school.
"Jean! Jean, are you okay?" Scott quickly ran to the large crater and carefully picked up Jean, who appeared to be unharmed.
"You're okay? So that means Clark won?"
Hearing Clark's name, Jean's face hardened. She grabbed Scott's hand and spoke to the group. "To save me from the Phoenix Force, Clark has become its new host."
"What?"
Clark's Struggle in Space
Meanwhile, in deep space, Clark fought with all his willpower against the Phoenix Force. To suppress his consciousness and take control of his body, the Phoenix Force flooded his mind with the emotions of every living being in the universe. Joy, anger, sadness, hatred, longingāhuman emotions and non-human emotionsāall rushed into his mind at once.
He felt the grief from ancient alien wars, a father's concern for his son across galaxies, Nick Fury's fear of him, and his parents' sincere prayers for his safety. These overwhelming emotions were a crushing weight on his consciousness.
To resist being controlled, he had to use his sheer will to fight against the combined feelings of the cosmos. If he failed, his consciousness would be suppressed, and his body would be taken over by the Phoenix.
"You're useless, Superman," the Phoenix Force's voice echoed in his mind. "You think the sun is the source of your power, but you don't need to absorb solar energy to fight. The sun just allows you to evolveāit doesn't give you your strength!"
