"Tony! Get out of the city, now! Superman is fighting, and the tall buildings are incredibly dangerous."
On a bustling New York street, the notorious playboy, Tony Stark, was driving his fiery red sports car toward Stark Tower. His sudden trip to the office was unusual, as he typically left his personal secretary, Pepper Potts, to handle everything.
The reason was simple. After a wild night and a party that left him with a new acquaintance from a tabloid, he had received a pre-scheduled email from an old friend: Richard Parker, the second-in-command of Parker Industries.
Before Richard vanished, he had a backup plan, one he hadn't shared with his younger brother, Ben. Over the years, Richard had gotten to know Tony well. Despite his rude demeanor, Tony was fiercely loyal to his friends. Richard had seen this firsthand when Tony reacted with hostility toward Ben after a suspicious equity transaction, a deal Richard had arranged to conceal the truth.
Richard also knew that Tony had a strong sense of justice and a good conscience, even if he was unaware that his weapons were being sold to terrorist organizations. What mattered was the information Richard had left for him: the blueprint for the very device that made him disappear.
Richard feared that if something went wrong, Ben might be manipulated by shadowy forces, which could, in turn, affect Clark. So, he gave the technology to Tony. If Clark were ever to be controlled, Tony, after years of research, would be able to free Richard, allowing him to intervene and guide Clark back.
Richard believed this backup plan was highly unlikely to be needed. He didn't think Clark would be so easily controlled. But for Tony, this information completely changed his perspective.
"Don't worry, Pepper. He's Superman, isn't he? The all-powerful Superman who can do anything. I'm sure he'll handle it. Besides, who am I? I'm Tony Stark, a man of destiny. God is on my side."
Tony gave Pepper a dismissive answer as he pulled up to the Stark Tower. He parked the car, intending to head straight to his lab to begin cracking the information Richard had left him.
Just then, a fireball streaked across the sky, its roaring flames echoing in everyone's ears. Inside the inferno, Clark and Jean Grey, now consumed by the Phoenix Force, were locked in a brutal, hand-to-hand fight. They relentlessly pounded each other, their every strike sending shockwaves.
In front of a horrified crowd, the fiery sphere with the two heroes inside slammed directly into Stark Tower, slicing the building in half. The skyscraper began to collapse.
"Tony, are you listening to me? Tony!" Pepper's voice came through the phone, but Tony was no longer listening. He spun around, trying to flee the building's shadow. He had no desire to become a pile of human paste.
He wasn't the only one. The street was a sea of panicked people. A little girl, who had been separated from her mother, crouched on the ground, crying in terror.
"Don't get involved⊠just don't get involved!" Tony tried to convince himself. He closed his eyes and ran past the girl. No one would blame him, except his own conscience.
I'm sorry, I can't save you. I'm so sorryâŠ
His mind was filled with apologies, but his feet had already changed course. He turned and sprinted toward the little girl.
"Damn it, Tony Stark! Why are you always meddling?" he cursed his own foolishness, but he didn't stop. He scooped the girl into his arms, using his body as a shield, ready for the building to crush them.
In that instant, a deafening roar erupted. When Tony opened his eyes again, he saw that the collapsing half of Stark Tower had been shattered into countless pieces by a powerful force. Around him, a large crowd of terrified people stood, seemingly appearing out of nowhere. Tony recognized the logos on their clothesâthey were all Stark Industries employees.
Hovering in the air, Clark stared intently at the Phoenix Force, unaware of the look of shock on Tony's face below.
"Are you not going to stop destroying things?" Clark asked.
From the start of the battle, Clark had realized that the Phoenix knew his plan. He wanted to move the fight into space to avoid causing more destruction, but she was deliberately refusing. Instead, she was scattering her power to cause damage and force him to fight on Earth.
"When my anger fades, I'll stop naturally," the Phoenix replied, seeming to regain her composure. Her reason was simple: revenge. She wanted to make humanity pay for its hostility.
Their battle had raged across the globe, and nearly every country had suffered some damage. Only the developing nations, with their lack of advanced technology, seemed to have been spared. In New York, the area around Stark Tower had been completely leveled by the Phoenix's power.
Clark had saved everyone, but he couldn't stop the destruction. He wasn't powerful enough.
"You managed to protect so many people while fighting me. Your power deserves my respect. If you want to finish this in space, let's go." The Phoenix-controlled Jean smiled maliciously. "However, once we're in space, the fight won't be so simple."
As she spoke, golden flames blazed around her. She shot into the sky, tearing a huge hole in the atmosphere as she exited the Earth.
Clark looked down at the shocked people on the ground. "Everyone, don't worry. I'll win. Because I'm Superman."
With a warm smile, he followed the Phoenix's path into space, using his bio-field to repair the hole in the atmosphere as he went, minimizing the damage as much as he could.
