New York City. Stark Tower.
A massive energy beam punched through the sky from the building's roof, extending up until it tore open this dark blue void in the air. And then... things started pouring out. Lots of things. Flying things that looked like a swarm of mechanical locusts.
Tony flew up to meet them in his suit, but Jesus—there were so many of them. The Chitauri army came streaming down on these sleek aircraft, heading straight for the streets.
Cars screeched to a halt all over the city. People stumbled out, staring up at the sky, trying to figure out what the hell they were looking at.
That's when the Baymax robots showed up.
They came from everywhere—red-armored, moving fast, flooding the streets. Red exclamation marks lit up on their chests as their speakers crackled to life.
"Alert! Alert! Dangerous situation detected. Please follow evacuation routes to designated safe zones!"
"Evacuation routes?" Some people looked confused as hell, but anyone who owned a Baymax already knew the drill. They'd gotten the messages earlier.
"This way! Follow me!" people started shouting, following the big white robots toward the nearest safe point. "Come on, stay with the group!"
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
The first wave of Chitauri hit the ground, standing on their aircraft and just... opening fire. On everyone. Screaming filled the streets as energy blasts started raining down.
But something weird happened. Even with all the explosions going off around them, people weren't getting hit. They looked up and saw dozens of red-armored Baymax units flying overhead with shields, absorbing every shot meant for the civilians below.
"Oh my God, thank you!" this curly-haired kid shouted skyward, tears streaming down his face.
It was chaos, but organized chaos. Families with Baymax robots led the way while the robots carried kids and used their bodies to shield people from flying debris. The cute medical assistants had turned into bodyguards.
All over the city, Baymax security units were setting up defensive positions at major intersections while the civilian models kept guiding people to safety. Even the cops who showed up started working with them, setting up protection corridors along the evacuation routes.
For a while, it actually worked. Instead of total panic, people were moving in orderly groups toward the safe zones.
But then more Chitauri kept coming. And more. The flying Baymax units started getting overwhelmed, and the evacuation routes were getting crowded enough to draw attention. The aliens started targeting the escape paths specifically.
The police and defensive robots were getting stretched thin.
On one of the evacuation routes, this big bald guy was hustling his kid along. "Iris, come on! We're almost there!"
The man—Tas—looked worried as hell, watching his son clutch their family's Baymax unit.
"Dad, are those really aliens? Why are they trying to hurt us?" The kid couldn't have been more than eight.
"I don't know, son. I guess they want to take over the planet."
"Can the Baymax robots beat them?"
"Course they can," Tas said, but his voice didn't sound as confident as his words.
Right then, something slammed into the ground next to them with a metallic crash. Smoke cleared, revealing a red-armored Baymax unit. The thing was completely trashed—armor dented, scorch marks everywhere, sparking like crazy.
It tried to get up, looked skyward with those same gentle black eyes, full of determination. Its jets sputtered a few times, then died completely. More sparks, and it collapsed back into the crater.
"Hey, Iris! What are you doing?" Tas saw his son let go of his hand and head toward the fallen robot. "Get back here!"
The kid was trying to drag the busted robot out of the hole. "I'm not leaving it! It was protecting us!"
"We gotta go, NOW!" Tas started toward his son, ready to physically carry him away.
"No! It helped us, so I'm helping it!" Iris had wrapped his small arms around the robot and wasn't letting go.
Tas stopped. He looked up at the other Baymax units still flying overhead, still taking hits, still shielding civilians even as they got shot down one by one.
He sighed. "Alright. Come on."
Father and son together managed to drag the damaged robot out of the crater.
That's when a chunk of building the size of a car came flying at them from nowhere.
Shadow fell over them. Tas looked up in horror, then threw himself toward his son.
THUD.
But no pain. No crushing weight.
"Sir, please take your child and proceed to the safe zone immediately."
Tas looked over. Some blue-furred... thing in Baymax company coveralls was holding the rubble over his head like it weighed nothing.
"Baymax Company?" Tas's voice shook.
"That's right." Hank tossed the debris aside like a basketball. "Please get to safety. We'll handle things from here."
As Beast headed off to help other civilians, Tas grabbed his son and their broken robot and ran for the safe zone.
