When the hunting grounds finally shook once more, the source of the monstrous sound revealed itself.
“What?!”
“Tha-that’s…”
An immense quadrupedal black creature the size of a small hill stood near the boundary of the grounds. It bore the semblance of a wolf, but its features were far more formidable, with a long, whip-like tail, and menacing blue eyes. The rough fur around its mouth was dripping with saliva.
“Jackalope…” uttered someone from the stands, causing gasps to spread throughout the spectators.
The jackalope was a creature rarely witnessed by humans. One reason was that it rarely ever came to human habitat as its main food was other monsters, and another reason was…
“Isn’t… isn’t that a legendary monster? No one is said to have come back alive after being its target.”
…Because those unfortunate enough to encounter a jackalope—which was so rare that it was considered a legend—hardly ever made it back alive to tell the story.
