“No portrait could ever truly encapsulate the essence of that moment,” Damien only replied.
Chloe found herself unable to contradict his statement. In that moment, she had indeed been awash in a sea of happiness. Daisy from the post office had been right; Thisse had been under a spell of good fortune upon the Duchess’s arrival, and Chloe herself had been utterly taken by the sweet, magical life that Damien had once woven for her.
“I said, give it here!” she insisted again, her tone more forceful. She was teetering on the edge of confronting a truth she had been desperately trying to evade.
