Chapter 60
Seeing Chloe’s apprehensive face, Marguerite gently shook her head in disagreement.
“I do not think so, my lady. His lordship would never let such a matter slide if he were to find out. Besides, Count Weiss is an old comrade from their military academy days and practically functions as his lordship’s right hand.”
Marguerite’s confident dismissal of the notion seemed to reassure Chloe, who slowly nodded in agreement. “Yes, you must be right.”
As Chloe reflected on the countless occasions when Damien had discreetly aided her father, she thought there was a possibility that he had done the same for Gilles. After all, Gilles had been an invaluable support to her, and Damien was a man who believed in repaying such favors. If this was indeed another of Damien’s covert acts of generosity, Chloe was prepared to feign ignorance.
“Once we move to Swane, I do hope to see Gilles,” she said.
