Chapter 26
“Why, Chloe, to what do we owe the pleasure of your company?” Priscilla, who had been savoring her tea by the sun-dappled window, glanced up at Chloe as she entered.
“I would like to speak with you,” Chloe responded.
“Come, sit with me.”
As Chloe took deliberate steps, leaning on her cane, Priscilla motioned toward Eliza, concealing the doubt that briefly crossed her face.
“Eliza, would you be so kind as to assist Chloe?”
“No, I will be all right on my own.” Chloe politely declined Eliza’s assistance, slowly traversing the plush, woolen carpet and settling into a chair.
“I was rather surprised to see you shut yourself in the study for three days when you have only just arrived here. I see you are similar to Damien in that regard. Once he starts focusing on something, he is unlikely to notice the sun rising.”
Chloe observed as Eliza poured tea into her cup, then parted her lips to speak. “Would you mind giving us a moment of privacy, Eliza?”
