Given Gilles’s compassionate nature, it was not surprising that he might have found it difficult to leave Chloe behind in Thisse. However, he was also not so imprudent as to risk worrying Viscount Verdier by failing to return. Had Gilles abandoned his responsibilities at Castle Verdier to return to Thisse?
Chloe felt an overwhelming urge to rush over to the train station and ask Gilles what he was doing there. She fretted over how he was faring in this unfamiliar city, where he knew no one, and how his quiet, uncomplaining nature might have led to him suffering undue hardships at work.
“Do you intend to dash off to the train station for a tearful reunion with your servant?” Damien mocked her, as if he had glimpsed into the hidden corners of her mind.
Chloe drew in a sharp breath. She could withstand his taunts, but she could not bear the thought of him harboring any misconceptions about her relationship with Gilles.
“Your Grace,” Chloe interjected hurriedly.
