Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE-- DEVOUR

"How long has it been?" a voice broke the silence of the night. There was a long silence before it spoke once again; "I– don't even know what to say to you, I guess bringing you up to date is the least I can do" the voice said, letting out a discontent sigh as it began its tale.

"I am presently living on the Southern continent, in Athens. It's been two years since – you were murdered–its voice turning cold for a moment–, the search for me stopped about a year ago. I have been laying low, but it's been–hard, very hard. To watch those responsible for your death walk around like nothing happened, all because I am – too– weak. The pain is immeasurable, impossible to control at times" The voice said carrying so many emotions; sorrow, anger and self-disgust, all targeted at itself. "I am ok though, like you said 'always look at the positive'." it said, its voice turning melancholic. Quiet sobs resound into the silent night followed by the sound of tears dripping like raindrops on concrete. "I know I promised to survive, and smile; but–how can you expect me to smile, when all I have has been stripped away from me. My family, my sanity– the voice chuckled– and you." Silence reigned once again only broken by the chirping of birds at the waking sun.

The first rays of the sun peaked from behind the horizon. "I just wanted to tell you, thank you–for everything." a tinge of sadness and longing found its way into its tone as the words struggled to come out. "I promise to avenge you…Sylvia" the voice said as the Sun's golden light warmed the cold ground and illuminated the surroundings. Its light soon fell on a thirty feet tall tree that dwarfed all the others around it. At the base of the tree stood a 170cm tall figure in a black silk cloak, its face covered by a hood.

The rustling of the trees announced the approaching wind, the figure's still cloak was carried by the wind. The hood of the figure is blown back revealing the face of a young lady, the lady had pastel mint colored short- shoulder length hair. The sunlight illuminated her pale white face with sunken eyes that still dripped tears as she looked towards the horizon. A pointed nose, small lips that quivered and a scar below her right eye –that gave off an emerald-green glow– adorned her face. Her eyes drifted to the concrete gravestone by her foot, a strange emotion replaced sadness and longing in her eyes for just a brief moment. Something dark, cold – revenge, hate, anger or something more despicable. The air around her stilled for a brief moment; "I hope we meet again…Teacher." her words were said softly but they seemed to burden the air that was to carry them. She looked up to admire the beauty of the Sun that stood proudly in the sky. "I will shine bright like that someday, won't I?" she asked out loud as though speaking to the Sun itself. "Why not…" a voice said from behind her.

The still air turned to a rushing gale; the voice revealed itself to be a young black-haired man that seemed to be in his mid-twenties by the look of his face, but scars littered his arms that were revealed by the rolled-up sleeves of his black shirt. One of his hands was raised to block the dry leaves and dust the wind carried, the other took cover in the pockets of a pair of black trousers. The scarred man's 'black-on-black' disposition made him look like a nobleman-clearly out of place-. "...with your abilities and my help, you should-no-you will shine brighter." his voice full of enthusiasm. "Metaphorically speaking of course" he said as he stood behind her. "What do you say Devil; will you join us?" He said as he finally dropped his hands to reveal his aquamarine blue eyes, they could be described by only one word--beautiful. Yet, neither the beauty of his eyes, his charmingly hypnotic voice nor the intense aura that he exuded could make the 'Devil' turn back. She gritted her teeth, the pressure of his aura pressing down on her felt like a mountain. A sweat broke across her forehead as she forced herself to remain standing. 'This why I need to get stronger, I will never kneel to anyone ever again.' Devil thought as a green glow emanated from her wrists, extending towards her arms. As the glow dimmed; a Jade green short sword, with a gold pommel and a green sun engraved unto its hilt. The pair of shortswords radiated a soft green glow that soon engulfed her. She heaved a sigh of relief as the glow washed over her relieving the pressure she felt. Her blade appeared at the neck of the eccentric man behind her. "Retract your aura– she said as she turned to face him, her eyes radiating an intense dark-green glow–I will not ask you again". He appeared lost; his eyes darting between the blade at his neck and the Devil's glowing eyes, he burst into a laughing fit. "First of all, You can't really win if this came to a fight. You know that?" he pressed her blade down from his neck "Do you want to test that theory" she extended her other sword, putting his neck in a pincer. The man put a pause on his laughter as he felt the aura the blades pointed at him released. 'What kind of swords are these? I have to be careful with them.' he thought to himself as his gaze inspected the swords, lingering on the green sun carving.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'I need to find out why I am getting such a feeling from these swords' his mind focused on the swords, a part of his aura seeped into them. The swords began to radiate a subtle blue-green glow. 'Let's find out your–' "What are you doing to my weapon? Retract your aura immediately" the Devil said enraged as she pulled back her swords. The man's face looked as pale as a ghost, his eyes devoid of life. "WHA…WHAT IS THAT!!" the man suddenly yelled, his eyes lost their light the next second. 'Where am I' he thought as he examined his surroundings. The greenery of the forest had been replaced by an eerie shifting darkness. A pale blue aura surrounded the man, barely illuminating the area around him. A pensive expression replaced the eccentric one previously plastered onto his face.
A pale blue light could be seen moving through a vast void of darkness; the darkness seemed to be endless as the figure moved through them. "I should have been in here–wherever here is–for half a day at the very least," the man said as he continued to look for anything that could tell him where he was. "Am I sure I am not just dead?" he said after a few moments in silence. A foolish expression; a mix between the curiosity of a child and his obvious eccentricity seemed to adorn his face in the form of a smile. He proceeded to sit on what seemed to be the ground in this strange dimension and cursed his fate for a few moments. "I can't believe I died before getting deflowered," he sighed. Moments passed with the man passing his time by either talking to himself or playing games. A quick glance at him would give the illusion of a frail, weak man that didn't understand the situation he was in. A trained eye though, would be able to notice that his guard was up and his senses were on higher alert than was physically possible.
 He abruptly paused during his one-hundredth round of rock, paper, scissors with his shadow. -GET A LIFE, JEEZ-.
"It should have been a day or two by now." he said as he got up from his sitting position. The pale blue aura that only acted as a source of light up until that moment; intensified, sending ripples through the vast darkness. "You can come out" he casually yelled, his gaze fixed onto the trembling darkness. The darkness seemed to gaze back at him; a cold shiver ran up his spine as the gaze seemed fixed on him. His face looked flushed with the innate fear of a prey before its predator. "You…bastard" he chuckled amidst gritted teeth. The darkness seemed to react to his words, vague, eerie whispers could be heard in the distance. The darkness seemed to take life as the faint whispers grew louder, all encompassing. The man seemed unable to bear the pressure generated by the whispers, his knees buckled as his aura struggled to hold. "What is this?" the man said as the rest of his aura seemed to break, the darkness seemed ready to engulf him.
"It's about time" a female voice entered his ears. He opened his eyes; a large rocky structure appeared in his line of sight. His eyes darted around trying to gain their bearings. He soon noticed the hooded figure seated next to him. "How long was I asleep for?" he asked in a cold tone, part of his aura seeping through his voice. The figure, though affected by his words, reached for a familiar green short sword by its side. "A day and a half" its voice trembled softly as it wielded the swords. The man's gaze landed on the swords for a few moments, his expression cold, pensive but beneath, it all seemed intriguing. He eventually shifted his gaze back to the hooded Devil; his aura retracted at that moment. 'My energy appears to have depleted despite my unconscious state. That must be why I exited that dimension' he thought as his aura moved to analyze his body. 'What would have happened if it was even just a second later?' what seemed to be fear flashed through his aquamarine eyes as he pondered about his near death experience.
He returned to his previous self as soon as he began chatting up the quiet hooded figure. "You know I would have woken up quicker if you had just given me a true love's kiss" he said pouting. His words though didn't seem to have an effect on her as she just sat cross-legged in silence. The sun began to set a few hours later. "I think I have recovered enough," he said, jumping to his feet, dusting his shirt and trousers. The hooded figure stood up less dramatically and moved towards what looked like the entrance of a cave covered by a boulder that seemed to be double her weight. Its size though, didn't hinder her from moving it aside and walking into the cold embrace of the evening air. "WOW! I had no idea Devil's workout" the man joked as he walked out of the cave. "As much as I enjoy calling you 'Devil', I am going to need your name." he asked the Devil after a few moments of bathing in the cool air. The aloof female beside him ignored his question in favor of admiring the moon. She took a few steps forward before stopping– "Lumina, my name is Lumina" she said, her voice soft yet firm. The man hearing this let out a grin. "Lumina, doesn't that mean Light?" he asked no one in particular as his travel companion created a large amount of distance between them. 'At least it doesn't have to do with darkness' he thought to himself. At the thought of the word darkness, the man's face turned serious as he tried to remember his experience. His mind lingered on the whispers he had heard in his final moments. They had seemed like voices, but now he realized he could hear the growling of beasts amongst them too. The words they spoke were incoherent to say the least, they seemed more beastlike than human. Yet, there were some words he could decipher. One of which was repeated multiple times…'DEVOUR'.
