Chapter 16: Lullaby's Symphony
The Lullaby flute lay cracked and silent on shattered stone, its three eye-holes staring blankly at the ruined hall. For a heartbeat, all was still—until a low, discordant hum vibrated the air.
A sickly darkness oozed from the flute's mouthpiece, swirling into a dense, oily fog. The flute shuddered, then split with a sickening crack. The eye-holes flared, glowing red.
Without warning, the flute erupted.
Tendrils of dark, fibrous material burst outward, swelling and twisting in a grotesque bloom. The wood warped and tore, expanding in every direction. Roots and limbs exploded from the core, slamming into ground and walls, sending debris flying.
In a single, horrifying instant, the flute was gone—replaced by a towering abomination. Its body was a mass of gnarled, root-like limbs and jagged apertures, dark as petrified wood. Three blazing eyes glared from its head. Cavernous mouths yawned open, each one a gaping wound ready to unleash death.
A suffocating, ancient aura pressed down on everyone present. The sky outside seemed to darken, recoiling from the demon's presence.
From its central maw, Lullaby's voice thundered, cold and certain:
"I can't take it anymore... I want to eat souls! Humans have no guts... I'll do it myself!"
A wave of sound magic, thick with rot and old curses, poured from Lullaby's mouths—a melody that clawed at the soul, promising death to all who heard it.
***
Lullaby's monstrous form loomed, sixty meters of gnarled limbs and glowing eyes casting a shadow over the shattered hall. Its voices rumbled, echoing across the battlefield:
"Run, scream, fight—none of it matters. Your souls are mine. Let the concert begin!"
"THAT'S what possessed me?!" Kageyama stammered, face pale as chalk.
"You were possessed?!" Natsu and Gray shouted in unison.
"Not relevant at the moment," Erza warned, eyes never leaving the demon, hand instinctively reaching for a sword that wasn't there—she was still in civilian clothes.
"Centuries have passed since I've been sealed, flies. I'm absolutely famished, so your souls will serve as my first decent meal," the demon sneered.
Natsu turned to Gray. "Souls are edible? Do they taste good?"
A tick mark appeared on Gray's forehead."How should I know what they taste like!"
Lucy's voice trembled. "Why did a demon emerge from the flute?"
Goldmine stepped forward, his expression grim. "Because Lullaby is a devil. Zeref enchanted it—turning a magic tool into living magic, as was his specialty."
"Living magic..." Erza breathed, eyes wide.
"Zeref?! You don't mean the one from centuries ago?!" Gray exclaimed.
A large, scowling Guild Master added, "The dark mage Zeref—most atrocious in all history... to think his legacy survives..."
The monster smiled toothily. "Who shall be my first appetizer? You? Or you? Or... how about ALL OF YOU!"
Magic surged around Lullaby's maw, the air vibrating with a deadly melody. The demon's mouths opened wide, unleashing a wave of cursed sound. The ground trembled, the air itself seemed to shudder.
Master Bob, usually jovial, had gone deathly pale. "That aura... that's no ordinary demon..."
"Everyone get back!" Makarov roared, already calculating escape routes.
Lucy clutched Happy, trembling. "W-we need to run! That thing's going to kill us all!"
Kageyama had frozen entirely, staring at the monster he'd been carrying. "I... I had THAT inside me?"
And then—
"Ice-Make: Shield!"
Gray slammed his hands together, a massive wall of ice erupting between the demon and the Guild Masters. The cursed sound shattered against it, cracks spider-webbing across the surface.
"Gray!" Erza shouted.
"I got the defense! You two hit it!" Gray called back, sweat already beading on his forehead from the strain.
Erza's eyes blazed. In a flash of golden light, her civilian clothes vanished, replaced by her Heaven's Wheel Armor. Two hundred swords materialized around her, gleaming in the demonic light.
"Natsu!"
"I'm FIRED UP!" Natsu's fists erupted in flames, his grin fierce and wild. "Let's go, Erza!"
The two of them charged.
***
"They're insane!" one Guild Master shouted. "That's a Zeref-class demon!"
"Those kids are going to die!" another cried.
Master Makarov watched, jaw tight.
"Natsu! Erza! Gray!" Lucy screamed. "You can't fight that thing!"
"Aye!" Happy chirped, though his voice wavered. "They can do it! They're Fairy Tail!"
***
Erza soared upward, swords orbiting her like a storm of steel.
"Heaven's Wheel: Blumenblatt!"
Two hundred blades rained down on Lullaby's head, each one striking with precision. The demon roared, one massive arm swinging at her—
Guild masters eyes widened as Erza's swords began to spin. "That girl... that's the Titania everyone talks about?"
***
"Fire Dragon's Iron Fist!"
Natsu slammed into the arm mid-swing, flames exploding on impact. The limb buckled, thrown off course.
***
"And the boy with the flames..."another murmured. Is that Salamander?"
***
"Nice one, Natsu!" Erza called, using the opening to drive a cluster of swords into Lullaby's shoulder joint.
The demon shrieked, both in pain and rage.
"STAY OUT OF THIS, YOU SMALL FLIES!"
A massive root-like limb smashed down where they'd been standing a heartbeat before, cratering the stone.
"They're... they're actually FIGHTING it!" Kageyama whispered, awe replacing fear.
"That coordination..." Bob breathed. "They move like they've fought together for years!"
Lucy's hands covered her mouth. "Natsu... Erza... Gray..."
Master Makarov's expression shifted from concern to cautious pride. They're not just attacking blindly. They're working together. Erza's providing air support and distraction, Natsu's hitting the openings she creates, and Gray...
"Ice-Make: Lance!"
Gray's ice spears shot forward, not at Lullaby directly—but at the ground beneath its roots, destabilizing its footing.
...Gray's controlling the battlefield, Makarov realized. These kids might actually—
"ENOUGH!"
Lullaby's three mouths opened simultaneously. A glowing magic circle spun before its central maw.
"Oh no..." Goldmine's face went white. "EVERYONE DOWN!"
With a deafening shriek, Lullaby fired a colossal magic beam. The torrent of energy carved a burning trench through the landscape, vaporizing everything in its path.
"SCATTER!" Erza screamed.
Natsu dove left, Gray right, Erza shot upward—
The beam struck the distant mountains. The peaks exploded in a flash of light, a mushroom cloud of rock and fire billowing into the sky.
Silence.
Then—
"The... the MOUNTAIN..." one Rune Knight whispered.
"It destroyed... an entire mountain..." another stammered.
"RUN! EVERYONE RUN!" The Rune Knights broke, fleeing in terror.
Lucy's legs gave out. "We're going to die... we're all going to die..."
***
Yume had been standing at the edge of the battlefield, purple eyes tracking every movement. His Pandora orbs floated around him, dormant.
He'd been watching.
Lullaby's attacks are powerful but telegraphed. The beam has a three-second charge time. Its limbs are fast but predictable—always swings from the same angles. Weak points: joints, eyes, and...
His gaze locked on the demon's torso.
There. The core. Center mass, beneath the bark.
Team Natsu was doing well. Better than well—they were magnificent. Erza's tactical air superiority, Natsu's raw power, Gray's battlefield control...
They could win this.
They would win this.
But watching them fight, watching Lullaby's massive form swing and roar, watching the sheer scale of the combat—
Something shifted in Yume's chest.
A familiar hunger.
I want in.
Not to save them. Not because they needed help.
Because he wanted to fight.
His lips curved into a rare, genuine smile—sharp and eager.
"Sky. Sea."
Twin Divine Dogs materialized from his shadow, white and black, two meters tall each. They growled, low and resonant.
"Perimeter guard. Protect the Guild Masters. Attack anything that gets close."
The dogs split, taking positions around the terrified officials.
Yume's Pandora orbs began to spin, transforming—eight sleek, dark spheres condensing into a massive triple-barreled rocket launcher.
Master Makarov's eyes widened. "Yume? What are you—"
"Joining the fun, Master."
And Yume's eyes—for just a moment—gleamed with something wild.
"That's... that's the Shadow!"** Bob exclaimed. "The one with the perfect mission record!"
Makarov said nothing, watching Yume's stance. That look in his eyes... I've seen it before. In Gildarts. In Laxus. In Natsu.
The look of someone who LIVES for this.
Lucy's gaze snapped to Yume. "Wait, HE'S fighting too?! "
Kageyama stared. "Isn't that... the quiet one from Fairy Tail?"
"Quiet?" Happy muttered. "He doesn't LOOK quiet right now..."
Suddenly, a streak of darkness cut through the chaos—a barrage of explosive rockets detonated against Lullaby's bark with a thunderous blast. Splinters and black smoke filled the air, momentarily obscuring the demon's face.
[MP: 100% → 92%]
Yume felt the drain—six high-yield rockets in rapid succession. Each Pandora transformation pulled at his reserves differently. The more complex the weapon, the steeper the cost.
The explosion was so loud and sudden that everyone—Natsu, Erza, Gray, Lucy, Happy, Kageyama, and even the Guild Masters—froze, their attention snapping from Lullaby to Yume.
"ERZA! NATSU! GRAY!" Yume's voice cut through the chaos. "I'm providing covering fire! Keep its attention forward!"
Erza's head whipped around, eyes wide. "Yume?! When did you—"
"FOCUS!" he barked, and fired again.
BOOM.
Three more rockets screamed through the air, slamming into Lullaby's back. The demon lurched forward, roaring in surprise and pain.
"What the—" Gray started.
"Don't question it!" Natsu laughed, flames roaring higher. "That's our opening! FIRE DRAGON'S ROAR!"
A torrent of fire poured into Lullaby's face. The demon stumbled, blinded.
Erza didn't waste the moment. "Circle Sword!"
Her blades spun into a deadly wheel, slicing deep into Lullaby's arm. Wood splintered, dark sap oozing from the wound.
Yume's rocket launcher shifted, morphing into twin gunswords. He didn't charge the front lines—instead, he moved to the flanks, supporting from the sides.
"Gray! Ice wall, left side!"
"On it! Ice-Make: Wall!"
The wall erupted just as Lullaby's limb swung—slamming into ice instead of Gray. Yume used the distraction to fire shadow bullets into the demon's joints, precise and rapid.
"Its movements are slowing!" Erza called. "Keep the pressure on!"
***
"They're... working together?" Bob said, astonished. "All four of them?"
"That dark-haired boy—he's not trying to be the hero," Goldmine observed. "He's supporting the other three. Covering their blind spots."
Makarov's eyes gleamed with pride. "That's Yume. He fights like a tactician. Every move calculated to maximize the team's effectiveness."
"But look at his FACE," Bob said quietly.
They all looked.
Yume was grinning.
A predator's grin—sharp, hungry, alive.
"He's enjoying this," Bob whispered.
"Of course he is,"Makarov said simply. "He's Fairy Tail."
***
Yume's feet left the ground as obsidian disks materialized beneath him, humming with dark energy. He hovered above the chaos, the disks leaving shimmering trails as he weaved between Lullaby's flailing limbs and blasts of cursed sound.
"Pandora: Mobile Battery!"
With a gesture, the disks expanded, merging into a gunmetal platform bristling with missile pods. Missiles erupted in a storm of violet light, arcing through the smoke and slamming into Lullaby's torso. Each impact sent splinters and shockwaves across the battlefield.
"What magic is that...?" Erza breathed, momentarily stunned.
As Lullaby reeled, Yume's platform shifted again, barrels extending and runes flaring.
"Pandora: Laser Cannon!"
A beam of condensed darkness screamed from the cannon, slicing through Lullaby's root-like limbs and leaving trails of smoldering ash.
[MP: 74%]
The laser cannon was expensive—sustained beam output through all eight orbs simultaneously. Yume felt the sharp dip in his reserves.
Eighteen percent for one attack. Need to be more conservative.
Gray whistled. "Remind me never to get on his bad side."
Natsu laughed. "Let's go! While it's distracted!"
***
Lullaby bellowed, a monstrous roar of frustration and pain. It tried to raise its root-like arms, mouths opening to unleash another wave of cursed sound, but only a guttural, disharmonious shriek emerged. The cracks and holes torn by Fairy Tail's relentless magic disrupted the dark melody—a cacophony of failing power. The death concert was off-key, broken by their combined might.
"ENOUGH!" Lullaby roared. "I'LL DEVOUR YOU ALL!"
Its three mouths opened, magic circles glowing—
"Not on my watch! Ice-Make: Cannon!"
Gray fired a barrage of ice projectiles, disrupting one of the charging spells.
"Yume! High right!" Erza called.
Yume's eyes tracked instantly. A root-limb was coiling, ready to blindside Natsu—
"Pandora: Chain!"
Black chains erupted from his orbs, wrapping around the limb and yanking it off-course.
"Thanks!" Natsu shouted, not breaking stride. He leapt, fist cocked back. "FIRE DRAGON'S WING ATTACK!"
Flames exploded in a horizontal slash, cutting deep into Lullaby's torso.
The demon shrieked.
"There!" Yume's voice rang out. "Center of the torso—that's the core! Natsu, Gray, Erza—CONCENTRATE FIRE!"
"You heard him!" Erza requipped mid-air, Black Wing Armor replacing Heaven's Wheel. "All together—NOW!"
"Ice-Make: LANCE!"
Gray's massive ice spear shot forward, piercing Lullaby's bark and cracking the core's outer shell.
"Erza! Clear the path!"
"Moon Flash!"
Erza became a black blur, swords carving a surgical line straight to the exposed core.
Natsu inhaled deeply, flames roaring around him like a living inferno.
"EVERYONE MOVE!"
Erza and Gray scattered.
Yume's chains released, and he dropped back, gunswords raised defensively.
[MP: 30%]
Forty percent. Everything I have left for this.
He poured it all into a single technique—all eight orbs converging, compressing darkness into a sphere no larger than his fist. The air around it bent, light warping at the edges.
The cost was brutal, but necessary. His magic reserves plummeted.
One shot. Make it count.
Natsu's grin was feral .
"FIRE DRAGON'S... BRILLIANT FLAME!"
The explosion of fire was blinding. A column of flames engulfed Lullaby's entire torso, pouring directly into the cracked core.
Yume, synchronizing perfectly, unleashed his finisher:
"Black Hole: Oblivion!"
He channeled all his darkness into a single orb, compressing it until it shone with a hungry void. He launched it point-blank into the core alongside Natsu's flames.
The combined assault—fire and shadow, light and void—met at the demon's heart.
The demon convulsed. Its limbs flailed. Its mouths opened in a silent scream—
And then it began to collapse.
Wood cracked. Bark shattered. The massive form tilted, falling—
"MOVE MOVE MOVE!" Yume shouted, already sprinting.
The team scattered as Lullaby's sixty-meter body crashed down like a felled tree.
Directly onto the Guild Masters' Meeting Building.
CRASH.
The grand structure crumpled like paper.
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then—
"They... they did it..." Kageyama whispered.
"THEY DID IT!" Lucy screamed, jumping to her feet. "NATSU! ERZA! GRAY! YUME!"
The Rune Knights, who had been cowering in the distance, slowly emerged, staring in disbelief.
"Fairy Tail... actually beat a Zeref-class demon..."
"The strongest team..." another whispered.
A murmur of agreement rippled through the onlookers, growing into a chorus of cheers.
"FAIRY TAIL! THE STRONGEST TEAM!"
Master Bob laughed, loud and booming. "MAKAROV! Your brats are INSANE!"
Makarov puffed out his chest, grinning wide. "SEE?! That's the power of Fairy Tail! Who's the best guild now, huh?!"
The crowd erupted in cheers.
***
Erza landed gracefully, armor shimmering as she requipped back to her standard gear. She was breathing hard, a rare smile on her lips.
*"Well done, everyone."
Gray collapsed to one knee, panting. "That... was insane..."
Natsu, somehow still energetic, pumped his fist in the air. "WE KICKED ITS ASS! Did you SEE that final attack?! BOOM!"
[MP: 30%]
Yume approached, Pandora orbs returning to their dormant state. His grin had faded back to his usual neutral expression, but his eyes still gleamed.
He felt the drain—thirty percent reserves left. Lower than he'd like, but manageable. His body was compensating, Batman-trained endurance carrying him through the magical exhaustion.
Enough to get back to Magnolia. Enough to handle any stragglers. Not enough for another S-Class fight.
"Good fight," he said simply.
"Good fight?!" Natsu laughed."That was AWESOME! Those rockets you fired—and the chains—and you found the core! How'd you do that?!"
Yume shrugged. "Magic."
Gray smirked, still catching his breath.
"'Magic.' Right."
Erza studied Yume for a moment, then nodded."Your support was invaluable. Thank you."
"Don't mention it."
And then—
A collective gasp swept through the crowd.
Lullaby's petrified body, massive and inert, hadn't vanished. It had fallen.
Directly onto the Guild Masters' Meeting Building.
The grand structure—symbol of unity and authority—was now a flattened ruin beneath the demon's bulk.
Happy, pointing a tiny paw, chirped, "Aye? The building!"
Master Makarov's triumphant grin froze.
His eyes widened.
With a faint 'pop,' his soul—a tiny, translucent version of himself—floated cleanly out of his mouth.
"MASTER!" Gray yelled, lunging forward. He snatched the ethereal form out of the air and, with a grimace, shoved it back into Makarov's mouth.
Makarov shuddered, coughing as his soul reconnected.
Yume, watching this, let out a soft, resigned sigh, shaking his head."Of course. This is how it always goes, isn't it?"
Lucy stared, horrified. "The... the building..."
"Our meeting hall!" one Guild Master shrieked.
"My antique quill collection!"
"My historical tapestries! You barbarians!"
"Do you know how many years of paperwork went into that grand hall?!"
"They destroyed it! Fairy Tail destroyed it!"
The adulation turned on a dime. Faces contorted from awe to fury.
"SEIZE THEM! Fairy Tail is responsible for this wanton destruction!" bellowed a stern-faced Guild Master.
The cheers of victory transformed into shouts of condemnation.
"Criminals!"
"Irresponsible!"
"They'll pay for this!"
"Lock them up!"
"Run!" Erza shouted, already requipping for speed. "We need to go, NOW!"
Master Makarov groaned. "Oh, for the love of Mavis! Everyone, MOVE! We're leaving! This is going to be a MASSIVE bill..."
"I knew it!" Lucy cried, panic washing over her face. "I KNEW something like this would happen!"
She grabbed Happy, and the group bolted.
Natsu laughed even as they run.
