Kimi's eyes widened slightly when Kolton spoke. So much had shifted in the years since they'd been apart. He couldn't possibly understand the woman she'd become.
Yet something twisted in her chest knowing he still remembered her old fear of darkness.
His voice from long ago echoed in her memory.
"Whenever the dark scares you, find me. I'll always be your light."
Her expression hardened as she buried those memories deep. This was the same man who had thrown her into the deepest darkness imaginable. It had taken her years to claw her way back to the surface.
She summoned her strength and knocked his hand away from her mouth.
"Alpha Kolton, what exactly do you think you're doing?"
Her sudden movement caused his other hand to jerk. The lighter's flame died instantly.
Darkness swallowed the room once more.
Kolton waited for her to beg him to relight it. Instead, her steady voice cut through the silence.
"I'm not afraid of the dark anymore. Those days are over."
