Kolton's arm turned to stone around Kimi's waist. Every muscle in his body locked tight, as if winter had suddenly claimed him from the inside out. The chill spread through his bones until even his fingertips went numb.
Kimi stepped backward, breaking free from his rigid embrace. She watched his face drain of color, saw how completely still he had become. With careful movements, she peeled his frozen hand away from her body. Her fingers brushed against his shoulder, sweeping away dust that existed only in her imagination.
"It's fine. These things happen sometimes. Your reaction makes perfect sense. But..."
She tilted her head, studying the shock written across his features.
