chapter 24: shadows of doubt
night draped the village in darkness, the stars above flickering like distant promises. ren sat alone on the worn wooden steps of maya's house, the cold seeping into his bones matching the chill settling deep inside his chest. silence was thick, broken only by the occasional rustle of leaves and the soft crackle of a dying fire nearby.
his thoughts were a tangled web — pride battling doubt, strength wrestling with fear. memories still eluded him, slipping through his grasp like smoke. each unanswered question carved deeper into his mind, leaving shadows where clarity should be.
"you look like you're carrying the weight of the world," maya's voice came quietly from behind. she settled beside him, eyes reflecting the dim glow of the embers.
ren exhaled slowly, voice low and rough, "maybe i am. maybe that's what happens when you're broken."
maya's gaze didn't waver. "broken doesn't mean finished."
he scoffed softly, "sometimes it feels like it."

ren's fingers clenched the wood beneath him. "what if i lose myself in this? what if the pride that drives me turns me into someone i hate?"
maya reached out, placing a hand over his. "then you'll find your way back. because you're not alone."

"thank you," he whispered, voice barely audible.
