"So, Miss Vale, how was your first day with your infuriating Silas?" Daniala asked, dragging out the last two words teasingly as Avery dropped into her seat beside her with a heavy, weary sigh.
Avery didn't answer right away. Instead, she turned slightly in her chair, her eyes flicking toward the door for what must have been the tenth time. She scanned the room, empty seat, no familiar messy black hair, no infuriating smirk. Her lips pressed into a thin line before she turned back toward Daniala.
"It went fine," she said finally, keeping her voice short, clipped, and deliberately neutral.
Daniala narrowed her eyes immediately. She could always tell when Avery was lying or more accurately, trying to hide something.
The short answer only made her lean closer, resting her chin in her palm as she studied her best friend's face.
