Chapter 2 - Caught in Crossfire

-[] Mia trudged into school, her heart still heavy with the encounter from the night before. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead like a swarm of angry bees, but her mind was too occupied with thoughts of Ethan and the deal her father had seemingly agreed to. She felt like a soldier marching toward battle, but what weapon could she wield against this rich stranger's impenetrable plan?

As she approached the cafeteria, she spotted her three best friends gathered at their usual table, animatedly discussing something, as they always did. Sophie had her head thrown back in laughter, Clara was animatedly using her hands to emphasize a point, and Rosalie was playing with her hair, a dreamy look on her face. Mia tried to muster a smile as she made her way to them, but inside, the turmoil gnawed at her.

"Mia! Hey!" Sophie called, waving her hand as Mia approached. "You'll never believe what we were just saying!"

Mia glanced at them, her expression quickly turning serious. "Guys, I need to talk to you about something important."

Clara raised an eyebrow. "Is it about that cute guy in math class? Because I totally think you should—"

"No!" Mia interrupted, her frustration bubbling to the surface. "It's about Ethan. The guy who came to our house last night. He wants to take me away from my dad."

The laughter ceased immediately, replaced by a stunned silence that felt heavier than the air itself.

"Wait, what?" Rosalie asked, her eyes wide with confusion.

"Yeah," Mia continued, her voice trembling slightly. "He's making a deal with my dad, and he thinks he can just take me like I'm some kind of… commodity! This is serious!"

For a moment, Mia watched her friends process the information, but to her shock, rather than concern, she saw excitement flicker across their faces.

"Girl, this is insane!" Sophie said, her voice rising with enthusiasm. "You're gonna be taken away by a rich guy! Isn't that like, every girl's dream?"

Mia stared at her incredulously. "What? No! You don't get it! I don't want to be taken away. He's…he's manipulative! He's treating me like I'm property!"

Clara leaned forward, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "But think of the perks! The money, the lifestyle… If he's rich, why not play along a bit? You could have everything you want! Lure him in, you know?"

Mia felt her heart sink. "How can you say that? Lure him? This isn't a game! I'm not a prize to be won or a trophy to be collected!"

"Come on, Mia," Rosalie chimed in, as if they were discussing shoes instead of a life-altering situation. "You're being dramatic! If he's serious, then it means he wants you. Just imagine going to fancy parties and having sugar daddy money! You'd never have to worry again!"

"No!" Mia shouted, the outburst surprising even her. "I won't use my…myself like that. I refuse to sacrifice my dignity just because he has money! You should understand that this is wrong."

The disapproving look on her friends' faces was almost more painful than the situation itself. They didn't seem to grasp the gravity of what was happening. "You'd be better off than anyone else if you just go for it," Sophie retorted, trying to keep the mood light despite Mia's intensity. "He's like a prince! Think of all the shopping!"

Mia felt a wave of anger wash over her. "You're missing the point! Money can't buy my freedom, and it doesn't change who I am. This is about my life, and I'm not okay with it!"

Seeing Mia's fury, Clara had a slight blush on her cheeks as she attempted to reason with Mia. "But you never know! What if he's different? Sometimes guys with money can be...charming."

The disappointment surged through Mia, making it impossible for her to stay any longer. "You know what? I thought you'd support me. I thought you'd understand how serious this is." She turned on her heel, heart pounding, pushing past the table, leaving them behind, their confused faces fading into the background.

"Mia, wait!" Sophie called after her, but the sound grew distant as Mia marched away. All she could think about was how alone she felt in this mess.

She wandered the halls aimlessly, her mind racing. Her friends weren't listening; they were caught up in a fantasy that didn't reflect the reality she faced. It made her feel even more isolated, like she was drowning in her own thoughts while everyone else floated above on clouds of blissful ignorance.

As she stepped outside into the crisp autumn air, she took a deep breath, attempting to calm the storm inside her. She thought of her dad, of the promises she had made to herself to stand by him, even if he had made the worst decision of his life.

"I have to find a way out of this," she muttered under her breath. There had to be a method to reclaim her life, to combat the situation that had spiraled out of her control.

As she walked toward the empty courtyard, birds flitted overhead, the sound of their wings a reminder of the freedom she had always valued. She took a moment to collect her thoughts.

"I won't be a pawn. I refuse." The resolve filled her with strength, warming her heart against the chill of betrayal she felt from her friends.
