·Chapter Eight

The first thing I noticed when I woke up was the soft scent of miso soup wafting in from the kitchen.

The second was how sore my shoulders were. Apparently, even with cutting-edge stabilization tech, crashing into crates at high speed wasn't good for muscle alignment.

Still worth it.

I pushed myself up and blinked at the ceiling, light streaking in from between the curtains.

> Morning already?

I reached for my phone, checking the time—7:13 AM. No alerts from the system. For once.

That was new.

No missions, no sudden upgrades, no spontaneous threats.

Just quiet.

And honestly, I didn't know what to do with it.

---

"Yuuji, breakfast's ready!"

My mom's voice carried in, bright and warm as always. I shuffled out of bed, slipped on a hoodie, and padded to the kitchen.

She was plating eggs, her back to me. My dad sat at the table, scrolling through his tablet and sipping coffee like it was a lifeline.

"Morning," I said.

They both looked up. My mom smiled gently. "You didn't come back covered in oil or bruises this time. Progress."

"Yet," Dad muttered with a smirk.

I laughed and sat down. "Give it an hour."

Truthfully, I didn't deserve how amazing they were. They never demanded too much, just trusted me. And maybe that's why I worked so hard to keep my secrets safe.

They thought I was a tinkering prodigy, not a vigilante-in-the-making with a god-granted system feeding me combat protocols and drone blueprints.

Still, this? Eating a hot meal in a kitchen warmed by sunlight and parental love?

This was the part of life I'd never had before.

And I was terrified of losing it.

U.A. Entrance Exams: Two Months Away

School life was moving steadily toward the climax we all expected—the entrance exams for U.A. High.

Class 3-A buzzed with talk of practice routines, mock battles, and prep materials. Even the usual slackers had a fire in their eyes.

Everyone wanted to be a hero.

Izuku was especially intense. We trained together twice a week now—him on physical conditioning, me on tech refinement and tactics.

He didn't know about the system. Not yet. But I trusted him enough to let him in on my inventions.

"Think Mei would let us borrow the gym this weekend?" he asked one afternoon as we ate lunch under a tree behind the school.

"Probably," I said. "As long as I promise not to blow it up again."

Izuku chuckled. "You only blew up one wall."

"One load-bearing wall."

He laughed harder, and I found myself smiling without trying.

He reminded me of who I used to be—awkward, uncertain, full of hope and fear all at once. But he had something I hadn't, back then.

Courage.

---

Mei Hatsume had been hovering on the edge of my orbit ever since we collided in the tech lab weeks ago. And now she was part of our trio—me, Izuku, and her.

Sort of.

Mei didn't "join" things so much as invade them.

Like today, for example.

"YUUJI!" her voice rang out as I closed my locker.

I turned just in time to get a face full of something metal and humming.

"Test this!" she said, shoving a half-assembled drone into my arms.

"Uh—what is it?"

"Micro-drone with tracking sonar and EMP resistance! Needs field data. You're perfect."

"...Is it going to explode?"

"Probably!"

I laughed. I couldn't help it. She was chaos incarnate, but I was starting to understand her rhythm.

We worked well together. She pushed boundaries. I smoothed the edges. She built fast, I built stable. Somewhere in that tension, real progress was happening.

And maybe something else, too.

I caught her watching me once—when she thought I wasn't looking. Not her usual manic stare, but quiet. Curious.

It made my chest feel... weird.

I hadn't thought about romance seriously in either life. I didn't have the time, or the courage.

But now?

Now I wasn't so sure.

---

That Evening — Home Again

Dinner was quiet.

Dad had a late shift. Mom sat across from me, watching me with those soft eyes that could read my soul.

"Your friend Mei," she said between bites of rice. "She seems… lively."

I blinked. "You've seen her?"

"You walked her home last week. Don't think I didn't notice."

I rubbed the back of my neck, suddenly warm. "She's just… she's my tech partner."

"Mhm."

She smiled into her teacup. "You're allowed to have a life, Yuuji. Even if you're trying to save the world."

I looked at her.

Really looked.

And for a moment, I saw my past life bleeding into this one. My old mother—tired, distant, never there. And the gaping void she left behind.

This woman? She was the opposite. Loving. Supportive. Proud.

> I'll protect her. No matter what.

---

I lay on my bed, arms behind my head, staring at the ceiling.

The system blinked softly in my vision.

> [New Task Available: Stealth Field Generator Prototype]

[Rewards: +150 EXP, Enhanced Optics Blueprint]

"Accept," I whispered.

But my mind wasn't on the task.

It was on Mei. On Izuku. On the kid I saved.

And the terrifying feeling that for the first time in two lives…

…I wasn't alone.

---

The next morning, something shifted.

In homeroom, our teacher cleared his throat. "Takashi. Principal Nezu of U.A. sent you a letter."

My blood froze.

I walked to the front, hands steady, heart racing. Took the envelope. Opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

> "Your recent actions in the Warehouse District did not go unnoticed.

The gear you used displays remarkable technological sophistication.

We do not encourage unsanctioned vigilante activity.

But we do recognize potential.

Continue your path. Discreetly.

Nezu"

I sat down slowly, letter crumpling slightly in my grip.

Izuku leaned over, whispering, "Everything okay?"

I smiled, just a little.

"Yeah," I said. "Everything's just getting started."

---

Later That Day – Rooftop

Mei met me on the roof for our weekly tinkering session. I laid out the stealth generator prototype, and she immediately started poking it.

"You finally tried the phase-array insulation I mentioned," she said.

"Yeah. You were right. Again."

She smirked. "I'm always right."

I laughed. "Hey… thanks. For pushing me. For believing in this."

She looked up, and for once, her eyes were steady. Not manic. Not distant.

Just focused.

"Of course I believe in you," she said. "You're the only person who builds like I do. You get it."

We sat in silence, the wind tugging at her pink hair.

"Yuuji?" she said softly.

"Yeah?"

"If we both get into U.A.… will you stay on my team?"

I met her gaze.

And in that moment, with the wind and the tech and the whole world just starting to unfold—

I knew something was changing.

"Yeah," I said. "Always."
