·Chapter Seven

The night before I wore the suit, I couldn't sleep.

Not because I was nervous.

But because I kept thinking about my mom's laugh.

The way it sounded when she caught me sneaking snacks from the fridge.

About my dad's quiet pride when I fixed the water heater without asking.

About the warmth of a home I hadn't known in my first life—one I now had, fragile and real.

The suit lay in pieces on the floor, each component humming faintly. The arc reactor pulsed with a soft blue glow. The gauntlets were sleek, bristling with micro-actuators. The reinforced underlayer flexed like muscle.

I could almost hear the system whispering:

> "You've built the machine. Are you ready to become it?"

Was I?

---

Early Morning — Takashi Household

I moved quietly, careful not to wake anyone.

Mom's door was closed. I could hear the gentle rhythm of her breathing. Dad's snores rumbled softly from the far room.

I stopped in the hallway.

Stood there for a minute.

Then turned back.

Opened the linen closet and pulled out an old notebook, a pen, and started writing.

> "Hey, Mom. Hey, Dad.

I'm not running away. I promise.

I'm working on something. Something that might help a lot of people. I can't tell you everything yet. I wish I could.

But just know that I'm not reckless. I'm not in danger. And if anything ever does happen, just know this:

I love you.

You gave me something I never had before—peace.

I'll be back by breakfast."

I tore the page out and folded it gently. Slipped it under Mom's favorite teacup, the one with the tiny chip in the rim she refused to throw out.

Then I slipped out the front door.

Abandoned Warehouse District – 4:47 AM

The wind was sharp. The buildings loomed like forgotten giants. Rusted fences creaked as I passed.

This district had once been a hub for shipping and development before villain activity drove everyone out. Now it was a ghost town. Perfect for field tests.

I crouched behind a rusted cargo container and opened the interface on my wrist.

> [System Boot Initiated…]

[Power Core Stable.]

[Suit Synchronization: 98.7%]

[Combat Reflex Simulation: Online]

[All Systems Green.]

One deep breath.

Piece by piece, I slid into the suit.

It wasn't flashy—no gold, no firework repulsors—but it was efficient.

Graphene-infused plating. Insulated joints. Impact-dampening pads. Built-in neural assist module.

My fingers flexed. The HUD blinked to life.

I felt like a storm in a cage.

> "Initializing Field Test Protocol."

I took off running.

Not jogging.

Running.

Every step pushed the servos, every twist of my leg fired the stabilizers. The wind bit at my face as I launched from one rooftop to the next using the spring-boost gauntlets.

I wasn't flying.

Not yet.

But I was close.

System Alert – Unauthorized Movement Detected

> [Alert: Motion Detected — 130 Meters Ahead]

[Thermal Signature: Human. Possible Civilian or Villain Presence.]

I slowed, switching to silent mode.

Peered over the edge of a rooftop.

Three figures—two men, one teen. Rough clothes, low-end gear. Not villains, but gang members, probably squatters or wannabes.

One of them was kicking something. No—someone.

A kid.

Couldn't have been more than ten. Crying, curled up under a blanket.

My heart slammed into my ribs.

The old me—the human me—would have hesitated.

Waited. Watched. Called for help.

But the new me?

He acted.

---

I dropped down fast.

The shock dampeners absorbed the impact as I landed hard in front of them.

The gang leader stumbled back. "What the—?!"

"I'll give you one chance," I said, voice modulated. "Leave the kid. Walk away."

They laughed.

I activated the wrist gauntlet. A pulse fired out—non-lethal, like a flashbang made of light and sound.

The leader staggered, blinded.

The second one lunged. I countered with a kinetic repulse from my left palm—he went flying into a stack of crates.

The last guy pulled a knife.

Bad choice.

I dodged low, twisted, and hit him with a short-range shock current through my forearm plates.

He convulsed. Dropped.

Silence.

The kid was sobbing quietly, trying to hide under their blanket.

I crouched next to them.

"It's okay. You're safe now."

"W-who are you?" they whispered.

I hesitated.

"Just… someone who builds things."

---

I called the local Pro Hero office from a public terminal, left an anonymous tip, and vanished before they arrived.

Back on the rooftops, the city was waking.

But I wasn't ready to go home yet.

I climbed to the top of a construction crane and sat there, watching the sun rise between steel beams.

I should have felt proud.

But I didn't.

Not really.

Because I realized something—

Helping that kid mattered more than the field test.

More than the system upgrade.

More than any percentage on any screen.

And that terrified me.

Because I didn't know if I was ready for what that meant.

---

Later That Morning – Home

I got back just as Mom was pouring tea.

She raised an eyebrow when I walked in, face slightly bruised, hair windswept, smelling like rust and metal.

"Rough morning?"

I grinned, sheepishly.

"You could say that."

She passed me a cup.

"You left a note."

I froze.

She didn't look angry.

Just… quiet.

"Sorry," I mumbled. "I didn't mean to worry you."

She reached over and brushed a bit of grime off my cheek.

"I know you're working on something important. I don't need the details. Just… come back to me, okay?"

"I will."

"You promise?"

I looked her in the eyes.

"Always."

---

Evening

My phone buzzed.

[Izuku Midoriya Calling]

I picked up.

"Yo."

"Yuuji! Did you see the report? Someone saved a kid in the old warehouse zone this morning. They used some kind of tech-based support gear. U.A.'s already trying to track them down!"

I leaned back in my chair.

"Really? Huh. Sounds impressive."

"Yeah! The way they described it… it almost sounded like one of your prototypes."

I smirked. "Nah. I wish."

"Anyway," he said, "Mei wants to meet again this weekend. Some kind of collaboration project? You in?"

"Wouldn't miss it."

"Cool. Later!"

---

That Night — Alone

The suit sat on its stand, scarred but intact.

The system pinged.

> [Task Complete – Field Test Successful]

[Experience Gained: 100]

[New Module Unlocked: Flight Stabilization Alpha]

[New Task Available: Simulated Combat w/ Quirk User]

I stared at the screen.

Then I shut it off.

No system tonight.

No gadgets. No stats.

Just silence.

I opened the window and let the city breeze in.

Somewhere down there, a kid was sleeping safe.

Because of me.

Because I acted.

Because I chose to become someone this world could count on—even if it never knew my name.

And that?

That was enough.

For now.
