Jayvaughn's hands tightened around the steering wheel as he stared at the phone screen. One second Axel's face was there, frowning slightly as if he had heard something in the background, and the next, the image spun wildly. The sound of the phone clattering against the ground rang out, then the call went black. Silence.
"Axel! Axel! Axel!" Jayvaughn shouted, his throat raw. His vision blurred as panic crashed into him, and his chest tightened until he could barely breathe. He slammed his foot on the gas, but his mind was spinning so fast he could hardly register what was in front of him. Tears burned in his eyes, and the next thing he knew, headlights from the opposite lane flared. His car jerked sideways. Instinct alone saved him; he twisted the wheel sharply, tires screeching against the asphalt. The car swerved violently, almost spinning out of control before he managed to drift back onto his lane. His heart pounded like it might burst.
