Chapter 7 - EXPEDITION GONE WRONG

The next morning, the alarm blared, pulling them from their sleep. Alyssa groaned, reluctantly disentangling herself from Alex. She had come to spend the night with him after she returned from her grandfather's. "Work calls," she muttered, stretching. Alex reluctantly let go of her and they got ready for a new day of work.

They were given a new case to solve. One that was relatively easy. After work, Alyssa felt the urge to do something, anything, to break the monotony and find some semblance of a lead. She had the backup of her grandfather so she needed proofs. Depending on what she finds on the other side.

She drove to the outskirts of the city, to the place whispered about but never visited: the cursed land. The area was notorious, filled with abandoned buildings and eerie silence. But Alyssa was determined, her detective instincts pulling her toward any potential clue.

She drove through the desolate streets, wondering if there was anything here.

"did I make a mistake? There's nothing here" she told herself looking around. "maybe I should just leave" as she was about to leave, she noticed something peculiar. Beyond the dilapidated facades of the buildings, there was a hidden path. Curiosity piqued, she followed it.

To her surprise, she emerged into a beautiful, well-maintained area. Elegant houses lined the streets, there were not many people walking around, busying themselves with daily life. It was like stepping into another world, a secret village untouched by the decay surrounding it.

Alyssa marveled at the sight, taking in the modern architecture and the serene atmosphere. Those people didn't seem to be vampires, they were walking under the sun light and they looked particularly normal, except the fact that they all looked at her car as if they were about to jump over her car and eat her up.

"maybe I should just leave" there was nothing here anyways. As she turned to leave, her path was blocked by another black car. She had no other choice than to stop and get down. Maybe she'll be able to ask some questions after all. A man with a menacing stance got down and glared at her. Or maybe not, for the questions.

"excuse me."

"what the fuck are you doing here? You have nothing to do here."

"I just came to look"

"this place isn't an attraction park or a touristic site. You are on a private propriety"

"private? Then maybe you should think of notifying it because I got on your private propriety easier than nothing." the man narrowed his eyes. "then maybe you should then leave my way so I can leave."

"what makes you think you can come here and go as you wish?"

"what's that supposed to mean?" The man's eyes glinted with a dangerous edge, and before she could react, he grabbed her.

"what are you doing?" Her heart pounded in her chest as she struggled, but the man's grip was unyielding.

"I suggest you don't resist" Alyssa looked around her and she was surrounded by people looking at her with accusing glares. They seem all supportive of each other. She was in a the weak position. Her only choice was to give up.

Daemon sat at the head of the long, dark wooden table, listening as his council members discussed the latest developments within their society. The room was dimly lit, shadows dancing on the walls from the flickering candles. He was distracted, thoughts of the fledgling they had captured gnawing at the edges of his mind. The young vampire had been responsible for the recent killings, a threat to their fragile peace with the human world. But someone sent him and that someone they had to find as soon as possible.

The meeting was adjourned and the room cleared. Then, Nate called him on his phone.

"We've captured a human on our land,"Nate said.

Daemon's eyes narrowed. "What? Who?" in many years of life, Daemon was shocked by very few things but this was something he never expected.

"Detective Alyssa Naerys. She was appointed on the exsanguination case"

Anger mixed with shock within him. A human on their land? That had never happened before. Her presence here could only mean trouble. If other humans decided to follow her steps, there will be more trouble than they can handle.

"Where is she now?"

"In the basement. I thought it best to bring her there before she could cause any more issues."

Daemon hanged up and left the catacombs immediately. He needed to handle this delicately. Humans discovering their secret world could lead to chaos, though they had ways of solving it. He walked through the winding passages of the underground part of his house, the air growing cooler as they descended into his basement. When he reached the room where the detective was held, Nate was waiting for him at the door.

"she's inside"

"I'll discuss with her" Daemon took a deep breath, steeling himself for the confrontation. He pushed the door open and stepped inside, his gaze immediately drawn to the woman standing in the center of the room. She raised a pair of eyes of a shade of blue he had never seen before.

Alyssa Naerys was stunning, even in her disheveled state. Her fiery blue eyes met his, and for a moment, he felt an inexplicable connection, an odd sense of familiarity. He quickly pushed the thought aside, focusing on the task at hand.

"Who are you?" she demanded, her voice steady despite the situation.

Daemon ignored the question. "the question is, what are you doing here, Detective Naerys?"

She squared her shoulders, defiance in her eyes, though he could hear her heart beat. She felt the danger. Good. "are you like the boss here?"

"more like the owner of the land you violated, detective"

"oh, right. I didn't know this place was a private propriety"

"you are a detective, you should have access to basic information"

"I didn't-"

"excuses are for the weak, detective." he cut her off "I don't like excuses" Daemons said sternly.

"so what, are you going to keep me here or kill me for a mistake?"

"mistake isn't an excuse before the court, you know that detective"

"so what are you going to do?"

"tell me why you are here and I might consider your sentence differently" The detective narrowed her eyes, not only suspicions shining in there.

Daemon stood up adjusted his coat and left without another word. When he closed the door behind him, Nate approached.

"I heard everything. So what are going to do?"

"bind her" Nate nodded.

Daemon walked away, his mind busy with a lot of things.

Do you think Alyssa was a little bit stupid for coming here alone and without telling anyone?
