Chapter 4 - The Cost of My Talent

I walked out of the ship and onto the sand around the ship. I was amazed at what was in front of me. It stood as a bright jewel in the darkness of night as the light from both of this planet's moons shot down from the sky that was now above me.

The first thing that I noticed was the structure of the ruins that were now in front of me. The entire set of ruins were all colored black with a light blue coding, and the lights on it were white but not lit up. In the front, I saw that there were a pair of statues that were ten feet tall. They were statues of the members of The Ancient Osdronian Dynasty. The building had only one available entrance that was a massive triangular shaped opening.

There were many Terrans walking around the ruins just like a colony of bees. They all seemed to run around doing their assigned tasks, and if they had a problem, they came to the person that was over them.

A tall black man who looked just like the person that I had learned about before I got to this planet.

He walked up to me with a pair of guards that were wearing matching armor. As he walked up to me, he saluted me by putting his right hand into a soft closed fist and over the center of his chest, and he kept his left hand at his side.

"You must be the doctor who is to be put in charge of the project that we have all been hired for".

"Yes, that is me, and please call Dr. Fulkore?" I asked him as I stood there looking at him.

"Would you like for me to give you a tour of the site?" he asked me while still at attention.

"No, I do not wish to get your tour. I can learn the layout of these ruins for myself. I would prefer to take a personal examination at all that has been found.

"As you wish, but for the sake of keeping you safe, I will ensure that you always have at least two guards around you. I will not take no for an answer because keeping this site secure and its workers safe is what I was hired to do."

I chose not to argue with him because I knew that it would be easier if he focused on his job, and I focused on mine.

"Good to see that you take job very seriously, Donivon. That fact that you are keeping us safe will help me focus on my part pf the work even more since I know that you will go to any length to fulfill the task that you were assigned by our employer". I said to him before I started to walk past him.

As I walked down the hill and was closing the distance between myself and the ruins, I noticed that the two guards that were originally with Donivon had started to follow behind me.

I walked at a very slow pace as a came within ten feet of the giant statues because I wanted to be able to take it all in slowly as I looked around at the ancient ruin site that could possibly prove the theory that I had staked my entire reputation in the academic community on.

When I finally made it past the statues and started to walk into the inside of the ruins, I was immediately greeted by a man who looked just like Dr. Alex Jhonson.

"Yes Dr. Jhonson, what is it that you need from me?" I asked in a somewhat upset tone because I wanted to get this conversation over with and return to exploring the ruins that could prove my theory.

"Well, you see, I can not tell you how much of an honor that it will be for me to be working alongside you". He said to me in a submissive voice.

I truly did not know if I wanted to work with anyone who was a suck up to their superiors. I always preferred to work alongside those who challenged the system. If he was always going to act like this towards me, then I would have to find him a replacement as soon as I possibly could.

"I will stop you there. While I value your experience as a fellow doctor, I can not tolerate anyone who tries to kiss my ass from day one. If you act like a fanboy around me instead of an employee, I will have to replace it with someone who can. Do I make myself clear?" I asked him as I turned around to make eye contact with him.

"Y…Yes…s…. sir, I can do that" he shuddered out the words with a look that made it seem that the sparkle in his eyes was now gone.

"That is good to hear that you can be professional enough to put the job before anything personal. Now, if that is all that you wanted to say, I will continue my stroll around the ruins." I said to him as I turned my back to him and continued to walk deeper into these ruins.

The entire set of ruins were all compacted in a single massive structure that was triangular shaped with only one opening on the top to let a beam of moon light shoot down from above giving enough light to see what was right in front of me but nothing more.

At the end of the entrance hallway, I saw a massive open room with massive statutes of the octopus like robots in front of a massive circular door which meant that the truth about my theory was on the other side of that door.

"How were you able to take pictures of things that were on the other side of this circular door?" I asked Dr. Jhonson as I looked at the door that was in my way.

"We were able to send a remote-control camera bot through the small opening in the center of the door."

"Have you found a way to get through the door without destroying it?" I asked him as I stopped looking at the door that was in front of me.

"We are not sure, but we think that there is a way to get past the door, and it has something to do with this pedestal." He said as he walked up to the pedestal that was to my left.

This pedestal was in the dead center of the room and lined up with the small opening in the center of the circular door.

"The only issue with this is that we have not found any method of opening the door yet. We have tried to make a custom key, but every time that we tried to get past the door, the key melted as it contacted the door.

Now you understand why we have not been able to get past the door". He said to me with a look of depression shown across his face.

"Let me see what I can do for you when I use my talent." I told him as I walked up to the pedestal and stretched out my right hand.

I felt the pedestal with my right hand and then activated the first tier of my talent. As I activated my talent and my vision started to fade, and as I felt the pedestal that was in front of me, I started to hear a mysterious voice that I had never heard before.

"To learn the truth about this artifact, you must dive deeper into it."

"But if I dive too deep, then I may lose my sanity to the point where there is no return." I stated to the mysterious voice.

"Dive deeper to find out the truth about this artifact. I can tell that you will do anything to prove your theory."

This voice that I did not recognize was right. I was willing to do anything to achieve my dream.

As soon as I activated the second tier of my talent, I slowly started to lose my sense of sound and instead of being able to hear or see those that were around me I was able to see a group of Osdronian scientist that were fiddling with a medium black cube that contained a small blue mineral at the top of it.

When they placed it onto the pedestal, I saw that the blue mineral began to glow, and then a beam of energy shot from it in a straight line to the small opening in the door. Then the door started to open.

"Well, you see, I was right. You needed to dive deeper to find your answer." The mysterious voice said to me.

I did not want to admit it, but this voice was correct. All I had to do was dive deeper to achieve my goal of proving my theory.

As I deactivated my talent, the entire world around me was both silent and black. This was the drawback to my talent. The deeper that I took my talent, the more senses that I temporarily lost.
