Chapter 14: A New Alliance
Lister's office occupied the top floor of a sleek skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered an unobstructed view of Central Park, while opulent decor and priceless artworks silently proclaimed the immense wealth of its owner.
Jack sat on a black leather sofa, scanning the room with quiet calculation. His meeting with Lister had not been spontaneous—it was the result of careful planning. He needed an ally, someone powerful enough to stand up to Emily Greene and the forces behind her. And Lister was that man.
Across from him, Lister leaned back in his chair, dressed in a tailored dark suit, his expression marked by a practiced, emotionless smile. His piercing eyes studied Jack like a chessboard, analyzing every move before it was made.
"Mr. Ryan, it's a pleasure to finally meet you," Lister said, his voice low and magnetic. "Your recent performance—especially your confrontation with ShieldTech—has drawn quite a bit of attention."
"You flatter me, Mr. Lister," Jack replied evenly. "In business, as in war, one simply does what must be done."
"Modest too," Lister chuckled, then grew serious. "Still, I'm aware of the difficulties your company is facing. Emily Greene is no ordinary opponent. Walking away unscathed won't be easy."
"I see your information network is as sharp as your reputation suggests," Jack acknowledged.
"In business, knowledge is power," Lister remarked cryptically. "I'm a businessman, Mr. Ryan. My interest lies solely in opportunity. If there's profit to be made, I'm more than willing to extend a hand."
Jack's pulse quickened. This was the moment—the negotiation would begin.
"What kind of cooperation do you have in mind?" Jack asked directly. He preferred clarity over games.
Lister smiled slightly, reached for a folder on the table, and slid it toward Jack. "I'm particularly interested in Ryan Group's technology—specifically your upcoming intelligent security system. If we were to form a joint venture around this project, I believe we could both benefit significantly."
Jack opened the document and began reading carefully. On the surface, the proposal appeared generous—but beneath the polished language lay hidden traps. Lister demanded a disproportionately high equity stake and imposed numerous restrictions on operational control.
"Mr. Lister, I must say, the terms are… aggressive," Jack said after a pause, setting the paper down. "The value of our technology extends far beyond what this agreement acknowledges."
Lister didn't react with anger. In fact, he seemed to expect the pushback.
"Mr. Ryan, I'm a venture capitalist. I take on risks most people avoid," Lister explained calmly. "Emily Greene isn't just a threat—she's a force. Going against her comes at a cost. What I offer—capital, influence, leverage—is what will help you survive, even turn the tide."
Jack remained silent for a moment. He knew Lister was right. At this stage, he couldn't afford pride.
"Very well, Mr. Lister," Jack said finally. "I accept your terms—with one condition."
Lister raised an eyebrow.
"I expect full support—not just financially, but strategically. We need to counter Emily together. I trust you'll honor that commitment."
Lister's lips curled into a satisfied smile. He extended his hand.
"Naturally. I look forward to our partnership—one built on mutual success."
The deal was struck. Yet Jack felt no relief. He understood the truth—he had just entered a dangerous alliance, a pact with a man whose ambition rivaled Emily's.
As Jack stepped out of the office, Kevin was already waiting downstairs.
"Well? How did it go?" Kevin asked eagerly.
"Successfully," Jack confirmed. "We've secured Lister's investment. He's backing us against Emily."
"That's great news!" Kevin exclaimed.
"Don't celebrate yet," Jack warned. "Lister is not a friend. He's a predator. More dangerous than Emily in many ways. We need to stay alert. One misstep, and we become his assets—nothing more."
Kevin hesitated, surprised by Jack's tone. Then he nodded.
"I'll keep an eye on him," he promised.
"Also," Jack added, "what about Isabella? Any new updates?"
Kevin's expression shifted. "Yes. She uncovered something new. It seems Emily's family has close ties to a private security firm called Blackstone. On the surface, it's a normal company—but underneath, it's involved in covert operations—intelligence gathering, sabotage, even assassination."
Jack's jaw tightened. He hadn't expected Emily's reach to extend so deeply into the shadows.
"Tell Isabella to dig deeper," he ordered. "I want to know everything about the Greene family."
Back in his office, Jack pulled up Blackstone's records. The more he read, the clearer it became—this wasn't just a corporation. It was a global entity with connections to intelligence agencies, governments, and elite circles.
Blackstone…
He muttered the name under his breath. With each discovery, he felt himself slipping further into a vast, unseen conspiracy.
Just then, his phone rang.
"Jack, it's Isabella." Her voice came through the speaker, tense and urgent.
"What did you find?" Jack asked immediately.
"I traced some of the specific projects between Emily's family and Blackstone," she reported. "They're using the company's resources to conduct illegal operations—money laundering, smuggling, off-the-books acquisitions."
Jack listened intently.
"There's more," she continued. "I found evidence that the Greenes are manipulating media outlets. They're spreading false narratives, attacking rivals, shaping public perception to gain financial advantages."
A chill ran through Jack. Emily's power wasn't just economic—it was informational. She controlled not only money, but minds.
"Isabella," Jack said firmly, "stop the investigation. Immediately."
"But Jack—" she protested.
"No," he cut in. "This goes beyond anything we imagined. If you continue, you'll be putting yourself in extreme danger."
"I already have key evidence," she insisted. "It can bring them down."
"I don't care," Jack said sharply. "Your safety comes first. I won't risk losing you."
There was a long silence.
"Alright," she relented reluctantly. "I'll be careful."
After the call ended, Jack exhaled slowly, a wave of fatigue washing over him.
He was fighting a war against a foe unlike any other—an enemy with unimaginable resources, invisible hands, and global reach.
But he wouldn't back down.
He would prepare. He would strike. He would uncover the truth buried beneath layers of deception.
And when the storm finally broke, he would be ready.
Because victory was no longer optional.
It was inevitable.
