Chapter 13: Turning the Tide

In the wake of the press conference, news of ShieldTech's executive corruption spread like wildfire, dominating headlines across every major media outlet. The scandal shredded the company's once-pristine image, leaving behind only a stench of disgrace. Emily Greene—once a rising star on Wall Street—had finally tasted real defeat.

Fury consumed her. She stormed through her office, shattering everything within reach—priceless antiques, rare art pieces, all reduced to broken fragments of rage.

"Jack Chen! You will pay for this!" she screamed into the empty room, her voice hoarse with fury, like a wounded beast lashing out.

Meanwhile, Jack stood by the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, gazing at the glittering skyline of New York. He knew better than to celebrate too soon. Emily wouldn't back down. She was ambitious, vengeful, relentless. Her retaliation would come swiftly.

"The pressure is now shifting to ShieldTech," Kevin said as he entered the room, handing Jack a steaming cup of coffee. "Their PR team must be drowning in chaos."

Jack took a sip without smiling. "This is temporary. The Greenes have deep roots in New York. Their influence and resources go far beyond what we can imagine. We need to prepare for a long fight."

"We've already assigned people to monitor ShieldTech's moves," Kevin continued. "And there's something else—Isabella sent word. She uncovered some information about Emily's family. It might give us an edge."

Jack's eyes sharpened. He trusted Isabella's intelligence-gathering abilities completely. If she had found something useful, it could be the key to delivering a final blow.

"What kind of secrets?" Jack asked, his voice low and steady.

Kevin lowered his voice. "It appears the Greene family has ties—some very deep ones—to notorious criminal organizations. Their wealth wasn't built entirely on legitimate means. There are strong indications of illegal activities involved."

Jack's expression darkened. He hadn't expected Emily's background to run so deep into darkness. This changed everything. He needed to tread carefully.

"Can Isabella provide concrete evidence?" Jack pressed.

"She's working on it," Kevin replied. "But these secrets are buried deep. It'll take time to dig them up. However, she's already uncovered some leads pointing to money laundering and smuggling operations linked to the Greene family."

"Tell her to be careful," Jack warned. "I don't want her risking anything just to get the truth. Safety comes first."

"I'll make sure she knows," Kevin nodded.

Over the next few days, Jack kept a close watch on public sentiment while quietly investigating the Greene family's past. He pulled every string he could—contacts, favors, old alliances—all in pursuit of undeniable proof.

Meanwhile, Emily launched her counteroffensive.

She held a dramatic press conference, shedding tears as she accused Jack of defamation and vowed to sue him. She used the media to regain sympathy, attempting to rebuild her damaged reputation.

At the same time, she leveraged her family's connections to squeeze Jack's company from all sides. Banks tightened credit lines. Some even threatened to call in existing loans early. Key partners withdrew cooperation or demanded harsher terms.

Ryan Group's stock plummeted. Morale among employees dropped sharply. The entire company seemed to sink under a thick cloud of uncertainty. Jack faced his most dangerous crisis yet—if he couldn't turn things around fast, everything he'd built would crumble.

"Jack, things are getting worse," Kevin said anxiously. "The Greenes have too much influence. We're not established enough here to fight back. If this keeps up, we're going bankrupt!"

Jack remained calm. Panic wouldn't help. He needed clarity, strategy, and above all, a breakthrough.

He walked to the window, lit a cigarette, and took a long drag, letting the nicotine sharpen his focus. He was thinking. Planning. Waiting for the right moment.

Then, suddenly, inspiration struck.

"Kevin, contact Lister," Jack said, his tone firm and full of conviction.

"Lister? You mean the venture capitalist, Lister Black?" Kevin's eyes widened. "He's known for being ruthless and demanding sky-high returns. We've never worked with him before. Why would he help us?"

"We don't have a choice anymore," Jack replied. "Lister wants into the tech sector, but he lacks real innovation and talent. Our company has both. We can offer him what he needs—and in return, secure our survival."

Kevin understood immediately. Jack intended to use Lister as a strategic partner to counteract the pressure from Emily and inject new life into Ryan Group.

"I'll set up the meeting right away," Kevin said, hope flickering back into his voice.

After several attempts, Kevin finally secured a meeting with Lister Black—a man who commanded respect and fear across Wall Street.

They met in an upscale restaurant, where they discussed potential collaboration. Lister showed immediate interest in Ryan Group's technology, seeing it as a valuable asset for expanding his own empire.

But he came with conditions.

He wanted controlling shares of the company and direct involvement in its operations. He even proposed replacing the management team to ensure full control over strategic decisions.

Jack didn't agree immediately. He saw through Lister's game—he was trying to exploit Jack's weakness, to seize maximum advantage when Jack was most vulnerable.

Still, Jack knew he needed Lister's support. Without fresh capital, the company wouldn't survive.

After a tense negotiation, an agreement was reached. Jack agreed to let Lister invest and acquire a significant stake—but refused to hand over operational control. He insisted on retaining leadership and promised that within three years, the company would deliver substantial profits.

Lister accepted. He saw potential in Jack—an audacity and vision that made him worth betting on.

With Lister's backing, Ryan Group stabilized almost overnight. Banks resumed lending. Partners returned. Stock prices rebounded. Employee morale soared.

More importantly, Lister used his vast network to strike back at Emily. Leveraging his influence in media and politics, he fueled negative coverage of ShieldTech and pushed for government investigations into their operations.

ShieldTech's stock fell sharply. Its reputation suffered irreparable damage. Emily's comeback attempt collapsed before it even began.

"It looks like we really turned the tide," Kevin said excitedly. "Emily never saw this coming. She probably thought we were finished."

Jack nodded, though his face remained serious. "This is just the beginning. Emily won't stop. And Lister isn't doing this out of charity. He's investing because he expects a big return."

But Jack wasn't afraid. He was ready.

He believed in his own strength—in his ability to outthink, outmaneuver, and ultimately prevail.

Next, he focused on consolidating his position while continuing to investigate the Greene family. He was determined to expose their full conspiracy and bring them to justice.

He knew the war wasn't over. A bigger storm was brewing.

And somewhere deeper in the shadows, he sensed another presence—an unseen force pulling the strings behind everything.

That was the true enemy.

And Jack Ryan was prepared to face it head-on.
