The massive wolf collapsed at Alara's feet a moment later from a combo of posion and gunshot wounds, its sheer size and hardened bones confirming what Alara already suspected this is a fully evolved level one mutated animal. Alara stepped forward, crouching beside the wolf, her eyes traced the thick scars across its body. A faint crease appeared between her eyebrows.
"It felt like I had some sort of mental connection with this wolf in the brief moment before he died," she said under her breath. "That's… really weird. Lately, as my powers have been awakening towards my level two evolution, I keep feeling connected to more animals and zombies. I even felt a faint mental link to that whale we killed from on speedboat. This must be a sign of my psychic powers growing in strength."
Alara exhaled slowly, her fingers brushing over the wolfs coarse fur. "This makes me wonder if soon I will be able to control mutated animals, they would make excellent combat material against awakened humans. From what Raven's said, awakened humans are going to be a serious threat to us, and conventional weapons won't work forever, at least not without stronger versions of them being made. Thanks to Raven's fluid rounds, even level one mutated wolves like this aren't too hard to deal with now."
Leaving the corpse behind, Alara walked inside the master bedroom the wolf charged out from. Her eyes swept the area and then stopped. Huddled near the far wall were five baby wolves, barely weaned, two males and three females. Then Alara received a mental notification in her mind.
[Apocalypse Ascendancy System Notification] Congratulations, Alara. These young wolves have been chosen to become your soul-bound pets, just as Raven received her ravens. The system will care for them their feeding, breeding, and handling all daily needs. They will be available as combat companions, and their numbers will grow over time within Sanctuary.
Alara's expression grew stiff. She waved the message away with a scoff. "I would much rather have the sword maiden robots that Raven promised me," she said to the now empty room, "and I'm going to make sure she delivers on this promise once we're done here."
The five pups glowed briefly, then vanished as they were absorbed into Sanctuary. Alara cast one last glance around the room, thinking that nearly every animal in this refuge is either already level one or close to evolving meaning there is little reason to stay here much longer.
Turning back towards the hall, Alara saw Raven standing there, calmly absorbing the alpha wolves body and the other wolves corpses into the system space. Alara's eyes narrowed slightly; she didn't need to ask why. In her mind, she could already see it cybernetic animal killing machines, half organic, half machine.
Raven caught Alara's look. "Did you get a system notification about those wolves, Alara? I have birds and now, and you have wolves. It seems like the system and this apocalypse are getting more complicated. With all these wolves so close to level one, plus the alpha, it's obvious animals are evolving fast. Same with that giant flock of crows the system tamed. We might be heading towards combat pets at some point.
"And yes, before you even have to ask I know that look on your face. The reason I'm collecting these corpses is because I'm making cybernetically enhanced mutated animals to fight for us. The same with the killer whale, the polar bear, and even those deer we fought in the zoo. I'm not actually keeping a macabre display dedicated to your kills, or am I?
Alara's lips curved faintly. "That's fine. Just don't do it with humans that's what zombies are for. Once I can control them more directly, they'll be a powerful addition in battle and i know about the display already nice try hiding it."
"Don't worry," Raven said, sighing. "I have no plans for cybernetically enhanced humans. I've seen enough movies to know how badly that ends. But we should designate space inside Sanctuary to raise zombies, along with any other apocalypse-affected animals you can control and as for the supposed display, you found i deny all knowledge of it's existence."
Raven looked around the wrecked master bedroom, then back to Alara. "Since we're here, let's retreat into Sanctuary from this house. We'll rearm and prepare for our next move. I've got a feeling that by the time we leave, we'll be running into more and more humans who've awakened their level one abilities."
