Raven and Alara arrived at the wildlife refuge a few minutes after leaving the field where the flock of ravens were located. The Ironhowl X4 came to a stop on the gravel driveway. Raven shut off the engine, scanning the nearby tree line, then stepped out of the Ironhowl with a weapon already in hand a Heckler & Koch MP5 fitted with an Omni silencer, twin extended magazines, and loaded with the latest version of her fluid poison rounds. These bullets, tipped with fast-acting liquid toxin, are designed to penetrate hide and kill mutated animals within seconds.
Alara followed suit, pulling out her own MP5 with matching modifications. The two moved in tandem toward the main house of the property the home where the refuge owners of this place lives. Raven took point on entry, raising her MP5 to her shoulder, while Alara covered the rear, her eyes scanning for threats.
The front door stood open. Raven stepped inside first, her boots stepping on a layer of dust on the floor. The smell of death hung in the air. In the living room, three skeletons lay on the floor, their bones fractured and bitten up with deep canine bite marks.
Raven studied them for a moment, her expression hardening as she said to Alara. "It looks like this is the work of mutated wolves. But the question is, have they evolved to level one yet or not?"
Leaving the grim scene behind, Raven advanced deeper into the house with Alara still guarding her back. They reached the kitchen when. A massive wolf easily two hundred pounds in weight stood between the counters, its yellowed teeth wet with blood. Raven didn't give him a second glance. She raised her MP5 and pulled the trigger.
Pew pew pew.
Three rounds tore through the wolf's fur hide, the toxin took effect almost instantly. The wolf collapsed onto the floor before it could even register the attack. The Omni silencer ensured the shots were nothing more than muted puffs, but the scent of blood in the air is another thing entirely.
From upstairs and through connecting rooms came the sound of claws running on wood. Four more massive wolves, each as large as the first, charged towards Alara their jaws snapping at her. Acting on pure instinct, she fired her MP5 at them.
Pew pew pew pew.
She shot four rounds of burst fire, three bullets each, every round of burst fire hit a different target. The wolves staggered mid-air as the poison flooded their systems. They fell to the ground thud, thud, thud, thud their bodies twitched before going still.
While Alara reloaded her MP5, Raven crouched beside the wolf she just killed. Raven withdrew a syringe from the system space and drew a vial of the wolves blood. Alara glanced over, eyebrow raised in question asking. "What are you doing?"
"I'm going to test the wolves' blood to see how rapidly they are evolving compared to in my previous life," Raven replied not looking up. "These animals seem to be maturing at the same rate as before, but you can never be too careful."
Alara nodded her head in understanding then resumed clearing the house, the air grew heavier with the scent of animal blood. As Alara reached the base of the stairs, two wolves jumped from the floor above, aiming for Alara's throat. With her MP5 still raised and freshly loaded, the response was immediate.
Pew pew pew.
Pew pew pew.
Both wolves were hit mid-air, the poison killing them before they hit the ground.
Alara stepped over the bodies and climbed the steps. The first room she passed was small, painted in faded bright colors. Toys lay across the carpet. She stopped at the doorway, her eyes narrowing, then stepped back. "Needless to say, there are no survivors," she said, moving on.
Alara continued down the hall towards the master bedroom. The door was half-open, as shadows spilled out into the hallway. Without warning, a huge wolf lunged forward. He was easily three hundred and fifty pounds in weight, its eyes glowed faintly in the dim room light.
Alara switched her MP5 to rapid-fire, braced her stance, and pulled the trigger. The magazine emptied in a single, burst of fire as the wolf charged forward.
