The three Key Stones corresponded precisely to Lucario, Blastoise, and Metagross.
Roy's intended experiment was obvious—he wanted his Pokemon to develop the ability to Mega Evolve independently.
This concept wasn't impossible to achieve. In "The Cocoon of Destruction and Diancie," that particular Diancie, under guidance from Xerneas, the god of life, learned to harness life energy and successfully mastered autonomous Mega Evolution, unleashing the tremendous potential hidden within her body.
Diancie, already a legendary Pokemon, underwent another life form transformation through Mega Evolution, becoming comparable to Yveltal, the god of destruction, and stepping into the realm of true gods.
Naturally, it would prove significantly more challenging for ordinary Pokemon to achieve what Diancie accomplished, given the substantial gap in natural qualifications and abilities.
However, the possibility remained real, and whenever possibilities existed, they were worth exploring.
If Lucario and the others were to attempt this feat, they absolutely required Key Stones. The massive life energy contained within Key Stones served as an indispensable catalyst for Mega Evolution.
Roy's theory involved having Lucario attempt to absorb the life energy from Key Stones and store it within their bodies, enabling independent Mega Evolution whenever necessary. The Pokemon would handle the process themselves, making things easier and more comfortable for their trainer.
This approach offered more than mere convenience—it would free Pokemon from dependence on their trainers and potentially enable "multiple Pokemon to Mega Evolve simultaneously."
The same principle could apply to Z-moves. In battle, imagine several Z-moves being unleashed together—who could possibly withstand such an assault?
Of course, attempting to absorb life energy from Key Stones would most likely permanently damage the stones. This was precisely why Roy requested only three, keeping the Key Stone on his bracelet as a backup.
Under orders from the Champion and Elite Four, official staff demonstrated remarkable efficiency. Within just two hours, they retrieved Key Stones from laboratory inventories across the country and delivered them promptly.
This rapid response was entirely predictable. Champions and Elite trainers represented a nation's highest military power. Although they didn't handle governmental affairs directly, they formed the foundation of national strength—power ultimately came from force.
In essence, these were the military's top leaders. Who would dare show negligence?
"Here you go," Sebastian said, handing Roy the box containing three Key Stones with obvious reluctance. "Treasure these. Don't waste them."
"Absolutely!" Roy nodded with sincere conviction.
Well, he would do his absolute best not to ruin these precious stones that even top masters coveted. If anyone discovered he was using Key Stones as experimental consumables, they might become so jealous their cells would separate, and Sebastian would probably vomit blood from anger.
Looking at the three Key Stones in the box, Roy felt somewhat emotional. These represented the equivalent of 300 million points. When would he ever be able to use 300 million points as experimental materials?
This demonstrated the advantage of having national organizational backing. He didn't need to rely solely on himself for anything. With his current status, obtaining several more wouldn't pose a problem.
Meanwhile, the Champion and Elite Four also received their own Key Stones. Following Roy's example as the founder of Mega Evolution, they embedded their Key Stones in bracelets worn on their right hands.
After obtaining Key Stones and corresponding Mega Stones under Roy's guidance, they naturally couldn't wait to attempt Mega Evolution.
"This isn't the right place to try," Sebastian observed, looking around the VIP seating area. Although luxuriously decorated with adequate space, it definitely couldn't withstand the energy storm generated by Mega Evolution.
Brayan suggested, "Isn't there a competition venue right outside?"
Frances frowned. "There are still staff and reporters around."
"What's the problem?" Sebastian smiled. "Let the outside world witness Mega Evolution performed by China's Champion and Elite Four. Wouldn't that serve as an excellent deterrent?"
Frances nodded, realizing he had overlooked this strategic benefit. The timing was perfect—several neighboring countries had grown restless with questionable intentions following his loss in last year's Asian Championship.
The group proceeded to the competition venue, instantly attracting attention from remaining court staff and reporters who hadn't yet left.
"The Champion, Elite Four, and Roy?"
"Wait, why are Lucario, Gardevoir, Gengar, Charizard, and Altaria all released?"
"With this lineup, I get the feeling something major is about to happen."
"Quick! This smells like big news! Start recording!"
Staff members pulled out their phones, quietly taking photos to share on social media and personal accounts. This represented one of the perks of working at the stadium—having opportunities to witness these celebrity trainers up close and add excitement to their ordinary lives.
Reporters raised their cameras, capturing precise shots of the unfolding scene.
"I'll go first," Sebastian announced eagerly, stepping forward with Lucario.
Lucario had already concealed his corresponding Mega Stone within his fur to avoid exposure. Once Mega Evolution was performed, the Mega Stone would be absorbed, eliminating concerns about information leaks.
Sebastian raised his arm and shouted passionately, "Mega Evolution!"
Lucario clenched his fists and positioned them at his waist. "Hah!"
Everyone held their breath in anticipation.
Nothing happened.
The air suddenly became very quiet, filled only with the sound of heartbeats.
Lucario's face reddened as he looked at Sebastian with embarrassment.
"Uh, this is..."
Sebastian felt equally embarrassed, turning to look at Roy and asking in a low voice, "What's going on?"
Roy suppressed a smile and whispered back, "Think carefully about the other condition I mentioned besides the stones."
"A deep bond between trainer and Pokemon is required."
Sebastian was stunned, sensing something was wrong. He and Lucario had been companions for decades, no different from family members. How could their bond be insufficient?
Sebastian glanced at Lucario with an expression asking "Do you have someone else?" and received a reply conveying "I'm already a father to several children—aren't you being ridiculous?"
Roy explained, "Your relationship with Lucario is definitely strong enough. However, resonance requires the relationship to be at its peak emotional state."
"Just like relationships between ordinary people and their family members—no matter how important they are, daily emotions remain calm. It's impossible to maintain 'peak' intensity constantly."
"Only when something triggers deep emotions, or during moments of profound connection, will sudden resonance and feeling occur."
"So what should we do?" Sebastian asked anxiously.
Roy thought for a moment, then had an inspiration. "Lines."
"What?"
"By reciting lines, recall the experiences you and Lucario have shared together, allowing your emotional bond to reach its peak and achieve resonance," Roy said with a serious expression.
"?" Sebastian looked skeptical. "That sounds like nonsense. What cartoon's weird setting is this?"
Having lived together at Promise Gym for two months, Sebastian knew Roy had a somewhat mischievous nature, so he didn't entirely trust him.
Frances laughed, saying, "Don't mess around, Roy. I noticed you didn't recite any lines when you used Mega Evolution."
However, Roy's next statement silenced them completely.
"Because I'm psychic," Roy said. "Whether through aura or psychic power, I can make my emotions peak quickly."
"That's what Mew said was the best method."
To increase credibility, Roy brought out the strongest authority figure and added, "You might not trust me, but you have to believe in Mew's wisdom."
After listening, except for Caroline, several middle-aged men, all at least forty years old, looked at each other uncertainly.
It seemed to make sense.
Roy wasn't lying—it was indeed a viable solution. Reciting lines was similar to mantras in martial arts novels, providing self-guidance and psychological suggestion.
Of course, the focus was on the act of 'psyching up.' As long as emotions could reach their peak anytime and anywhere, lines weren't necessary at all.
But Roy deliberately confused the concepts, making line recitation seem like the optimal method.
Hearing Mew's name mentioned, Frances, Sebastian, and the others began wavering in their skepticism.
However, it felt extremely embarrassing for forty-year-old men to recite evolution lines.
Sebastian suddenly turned to look at Caroline and asked, "Elite Caroline, is what Roy said true? Did Mew really say this?"
Roy's heart skipped a beat—he had almost forgotten that Caroline, with her powerful psychic abilities, could detect lies.
However, unexpectedly, Caroline nodded without hesitation, her pleasant voice lacking emotion as she spoke.
"It's true."
To add credibility, she made a rare additional statement: "I guarantee it in the name of my Elite status."
Hearing this, Gardevoir's resentful gaze lingered on both Caroline and Roy.
Caroline had even invoked her Elite reputation. Now Frances, Sebastian, and the others had no choice but to believe it.
They began racking their brains thinking about what lines to say.
Five minutes later, Sebastian was the first to stand up.
"Whew."
Sebastian took a deep breath, made eye contact with Lucario, then slowly raised his right hand, focusing his energy on the Key Stone.
Immediately, he sang loudly: "A rock as immovable as the earth, you are the strongest fighting king, burning our hearts, beliefs, and souls, bursting forth with the strongest fighting spirit! Aura is with us! Mega Evolution!"
Shame aside, perhaps because of the embarrassment, both trainer and Pokemon's emotions became heightened and reached a peak sufficient for resonance.
In an instant, brilliant light erupted.
Mega Lucario appeared before everyone.
Seeing that reciting lines actually worked, Frances, Brayan, and Ryland no longer hesitated and stood up one after another.
Frances declared: "Altaria, you are the singer upon the clouds, the incarnation of air currents, dance like a dragon here..."
Brayan proclaimed: "Gengar, you are the ghost of dark hell, the glutton that devours all life..."
Ryland announced: "Charizard, the gathered solar power will become a heat wave shining everywhere, becoming a brilliant path—burn it all..."
Roy had somehow silently picked up his phone and captured close-up footage of everything.
Although the corners of his mouth were raised, he really wasn't smiling. He had simply remembered something happy.
The happiness of men could be remarkably simple.
Caroline used psychic power to activate her Key Stone and evolve Gardevoir into its Mega form, but she didn't even glance at the increasingly beautiful Mega Gardevoir. Instead, she silently observed the grinning Roy, her eyes clear as summer spring water, rippling with subtle changes.
