"The nurse sisters said they don't even need to eat when they look at you. They say you're rich and handsome, and ever since you arrived, lots of women have shown up here," Hilary continued. As she spoke, she touched Gilbert's cheek with her tiny fingers, her big round eyes blinking like dark grapes.
Gilbert almost burst out laughing.
"Hilary, don't listen to that nonsense. I'm practically blind now, no pretty woman would want to live with a blind man," he said with a wry smile.
"That's not true. My mommy would."
Gilbert stiffened. "Really? Your mommy would?"
"It's true. I can see inside her heart," Hilary said solemnly.
Gilbert sat up and reached his hands toward her. "Hilary, can I give you a hug?"
"Of course!" She had waited so long for Daddy to want to hug her. With a happy hop, she landed in his arms.
Gilbert gently gathered her close.
