The Shadow on the Cliff
Aurelian did not smile. There was not a little movement on his face. His eyes were fixed on something away. They looked past the burned ground past the pieces of eagles that had fallen past the whole valley. All the way to the rough cliffside, in the distance.
Then for just a moment he actually saw it.
The figure stood out really black, against the bright morning light. It was stiff. Did not move. The wind went around the edges of its cloak. You could hear the cloth touching the stone softly. It made you think the figure might move. Then in a flash the figure was gone, hidden by the sunlight. The sunlight was so strong that the figure just disappeared.
