"What!? Every monster with 1500 attack points or less is..." Jaden's expression shifted slightly.
"That's right! This is a new breed of virus evolved from the Virus Decks over the years. It has already surpassed the original tactics used by Kaiba!" Beta laughed uproariously.
All monsters with 1500 or less attack in the opponent's hand, on the field, and drawn over the next three turns would be destroyed. While it wasn't as immediately devastating as the animated version of the Crush Card Virus which wiped out every eligible monster in the Deck at once its suppressive power was arguably even greater.
First of all, the Crush Card Virus was a one-time deal; it only destroyed monsters in the Deck at the moment of activation. If the opponent used recovery-type Spells or Traps to bring them back from the Graveyard afterward, those monsters would no longer be affected.
But this Deck Devastation Virus was different. Although it didn't blow up every HERO in Jaden's Deck in one go, every monster he drew for the next three turns would be instantly destroyed.
In other words, he had nothing left to play.
"Hahaha! You didn't think my virus would be helpless against a Deck full of low-attack trash, did you? I told you, the power of the evolved ultimate virus has no blind spots!" Beta roared with laughter.
"How can this be..." Syrus stammered. "With every monster over 1500 and under 1500 being destroyed, doesn't that mean big bro has nothing left to summon?"
The Hardworking Couple, Elemental HERO Avian and Elemental HERO Burstinatrix, who had just been drawn into Jaden's hand, were both sent to the Graveyard. Left with no monsters to play, Jaden could only say, "I'll set one card and end my turn."
"My turn, draw!"
Beta drew his card and squinted as he eyed Jaden's backrow.
"Ending with just one set card? Well, it's not like you can summon anything else, so I suppose you're helpless."
Beta let out a snorted laugh.
"It looks like that set card is the only thing left keeping you alive. In that case, let me remove your final hope. I activate my set card, the Equip Spell, Premature Burial! By paying 800 Life Points, I can revive a monster from my Graveyard in Attack Position!"
[Beta, LP 1150 → LP 350]
"I revive the card I discarded last turn Darkstorm Dragon, come forth!"
A deep black rift tore open in the air, looking as though the very fabric of space was shattering. A cold wind whipped up dust and fallen leaves, forming a black tornado that surged toward the sky.
A massive dragon slowly emerged from the center of the storm, its body covered in scales as dark as the night itself. Two enormous black wings unfurled, blotting out the sun, and the sound of them flapping tore through the air with a sharp, whistling screech.
[Darkstorm Dragon, ATK 2700]
"Darkstorm Dragon is a Gemini monster. While on the field, it can be Normal Summoned a second time to gain its new effect. Therefore, I Gemini Summon Darkstorm Dragon to unlock its power!"
Beta waved his hand grandly.
"Once per turn, by sending one face-up Spell or Trap card I control to the Graveyard, I can destroy all other Spell and Trap cards on the field! I send my Equip Spell, Premature Burial, to the Graveyard to destroy Jaden's entire backrow!"
An apocalyptic gale erupted, thick as ink, engulfing the entire field in endless darkness. Jaden's face-down card was swept into the air, where it was shredded into tiny points of light.
It was the Trap Card, Mirror Force.
Syrus cried out, "Ah! Big bro's Mirror Force was..."
"Hahaha! What a pity. So it was Mirror Force. If you had managed to activate that, you might have actually stood a chance."
Beta shouted, "Battle! Darkstorm Dragon, attack him directly!"
The tornado swept forward, its violent currents forming countless smaller cyclones that swirled around the main vortex like a feast of storms. The gale, hiding ten thousand blades within it, tore across Jaden's body.
"Ugh... aah!"
[Jaden, LP 4000 → LP 1300]
Jaden stumbled, falling to one knee.
"What is this... this pain..."
Naturally, his mind immediately jumped back to the impact he had experienced during his tag duel with Yugen in the Duel Spirit World.
Could this be... a Shadow Game?
He looked up at the man in black, becoming increasingly certain that this person was anything but ordinary.
"I told you, you don't have a single chance," Beta said confidently. "I set one card. Turn end."
After finishing his move, Beta looked down at Jaden with a cold smirk.
"If you surrender now, you might suffer a little less."
"What are you talking about?"
Jaden brushed the dust off his clothes and stood up, still wearing a cheerful grin.
"This is the first time I've seen a tactic this fun. Why would I quit now?"
"You're crazy..." Beta muttered.
Is he brain-damaged?
"Your Deck is suffering under a double virus," Beta said coldly. "You can't even perform a [Fusion] from your hand. In a situation like this, how exactly do you plan to turn this around?"
"I don't know," Jaden admitted frankly.
Beta stared. "?"
"It's exactly because I don't know that makes it so much fun, right?" Jaden excitedly raised his right hand in a drawing motion. "I don't know what I'll pull, but I can feel it. This draw might just change the world. Doesn't just thinking about that make your heart race?"
Beta was speechless. "..."
No, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
"Haha, if you don't understand, I'll just have to show you. My turn, draw!"
Jaden immediately played the card he had drawn.
"I activate the Spell Card, Graceful Charity! I draw three cards and then discard two to the Graveyard."
"Useless," Beta sneered. "No matter what monster you draw, you won't be able to keep it in your hand."
Jaden discarded two cards.
"Next, I activate the Spell, Fifth Hope! I take five cards from my Graveyard with 'Elemental HERO' in their names and shuffle them back into my Deck. Then, I draw two cards. Since I have no other cards in my hand or on the field,
I draw three cards instead! I shuffle Elemental HERO Bladedge, Elemental HERO Wildheart, Elemental HERO Avian, Elemental HERO Burstinatrix, and the Elemental HERO Bubbleman I just discarded back into the Deck!"
The five monsters turned into streaks of golden light and flew back into his Deck one by one.
"I told you drawing is useless," Beta said, shaking his head. "Even if you recycle them, as soon as they hit your hand, they'll be destroyed wait!?"
He caught a glimpse of one of the cards Jaden was shuffling back and suddenly realized something.
"That's right... Deck Devastation Virus only destroys monsters with 1500 attack or less. If you draw a high-level monster with high attack, it won't be destroyed. So your goal is..."
Beta immediately thought of the card Jaden had tucked away among the other HEROs: Elemental HERO Bladedge, a high-level HERO with 2600 attack points.
"And you still have Elemental HERO Necroshade in your Graveyard from when it was destroyed by my virus. If I recall, its effect is..."
"Oh? You noticed?" Jaden laughed. "Exactly. While Necroshade is in the Graveyard, I can Normal Summon one 'Elemental HERO' monster without a Tribute."
"But you only have one high-level monster in your entire Deck the Bladedge you just shuffled back," Beta said grimly. "This combo only works if you manage to precisely draw that one specific card. Even if you do summon it, its attack is still 100 points lower than Darkstorm Dragon's. You'd still need to draw something to boost its power..."
"Hahaha, thinking that much ahead takes all the mystery out of it," Jaden laughed. "How the turn goes depends entirely on what I draw next, right?"
Beta was silent. "..."
No, this kid's mindset is definitely not right.
"Alright, here I go! Since I have no other cards, Fifth Hope allows me to draw three cards. Draw!"
Jaden whipped three cards from his Deck.
Beta stared at him without blinking.
Realistically, your Deck is still huge. Shuffling one card back and expecting to pull it with a random draw is just a joke...
"I activate the effect of Elemental HERO Necroshade in my Graveyard!" Jaden shouted. "I Normal Summon Elemental HERO Bladedge without a Tribute!"
"Nani!?"
The golden-armored metal hero surged onto the field, engines roaring as it spun through the air and landed heroically in front of Jaden.
[Elemental HERO Bladedge, ATK 2600]
"He actually... actually drew it..." Beta was in shock.
Is this kid a top-decking god?
Even though he had seen Jaden perform like this countless times, Chumley couldn't help but comment, "Jaden's draws are just unfair..."
Bladedge's attack was lower than Darkstorm Dragon's, but only by a meager 100 points. Since Beta only had 350 Life Points left, if that jellyfish-haired brat had drawn even a single card that could boost his attack by 500, it would be over.
After witnessing such a precise god-draw, Beta didn't want to gamble.
"I activate my Trap Trap Hole! When a monster with 1000 or more attack is summoned, it is destroyed immediately!"
A pitch-black void opened beneath Bladedge's feet. The hero stumbled, falling into the pit, and exploded into fragments with a loud boom.
"Ah!" Syrus cried. "Big bro's turnaround monster was..."
"Hahahaha! So that was your comeback? Too bad it didn't work!"
Beta laughed, feigning composure, though he was secretly breaking out in a cold sweat.
Damn, there's something wrong with this kid. He actually pulled it. He nearly gave me a heart attack... Fortunately, I'm the better duelist.
"In that case, I activate the Spell Card, Miracle Fusion from my hand!" Jaden said with a smile.
"Huh?"
Beta's laughter died instantly.
What? Miracle Fusion?
"This card lets me perform a [Fusion] using my HEROs in the Graveyard," Jaden explained. "By banishing the materials required for an 'Elemental HERO' Fusion Monster from my field or Graveyard, I can Fusion Summon!"
He paused and gave a small smile.
"However, I'm going to use this card from my Graveyard as a substitute material."
He pulled a monster card from his Graveyard slot.
"The other monster I discarded with Graceful Charity: The Light - Hex-Sealed Fusion. This card can be used as a substitute for any one Fusion Material. Therefore, I will use The Light - Hex-Sealed Fusion to replace Elemental HERO Flame Wingman and fuse it with the Elemental HERO Sparkman in my Graveyard! Appear amidst the brilliant light"
The Hex-Sealed creature transformed into the image of Flame Wingman, swirling together with Sparkman in a vortex of light. A blinding radiance erupted as an Elemental HERO clad in high-tech, holy armor emerged from the flow of light.
"Elemental HERO Shining Flame Wingman, come forth!"
[Elemental HERO Shining Flame Wingman, ATK 2500]
"Fusing from the Graveyard..." Beta gritted his teeth.
"And that's not all. Shining Flame Wingman gains 300 attack points for every Elemental HERO in my Graveyard," Jaden smiled. "I still have Elemental HERO Necroshade and Elemental HERO Bladedge in there, so its attack increases by 600!"
[Elemental HERO Shining Flame Wingman, ATK 2500 → ATK 3100]
"3100 attack!?" Beta gasped in shock.
"Plus, when Shining Flame Wingman destroys a monster by battle, it deals damage to the opponent equal to the destroyed monster's attack points... though it looks like that won't be necessary now," Jaden chuckled.
Beta was speechless. "..."
So you're saying I basically owe you a few more lives?
"Battle!" Jaden commanded. "Shining Flame Wingman, attack Darkstorm Dragon!"
The metal wings were engulfed in holy light, the radiance taking the form of intense flames. Shining Flame Wingman pressed his palms together in front of his chest, and a brilliant beam of light erupted from his palms. It was like a lightning bolt piercing through a dense forest, carving right through Darkstorm Dragon and roaring past Beta.
The force of the blast sent Beta flying backward into the air. He spun through the storm before plummeting off the cliff, his eyes filled with disbelief until the very end.
That look of pure resentment seemed to scream one final question
How the hell are you so good at top-decking?
[Beta, LP 350 → LP 0]
