Beta held his breath for a moment, unable to stop himself from asking, "That's it? There's nothing else?"

"Huh?" Jaden blinked, caught off guard.

"Monsters with 1500 or more attack points... don't you have any left in your deck?"

"Hmm... it seems like I don't." Jaden rubbed his chin in deep thought. "Now that you mention it, I think Elemental HERO Captain Gold has more than 1500 attack, but I didn't bring him today."

Beta: "..."

The joy Beta had felt when Crush Card Virus successfully resolved vanished instantly. A weapon that should have been a death sentence for most decks felt like punching a pile of cotton when used against this jellyfish-head's deck.

"Tch, I was careless. An Elemental HERO deck focused on Fusion? The main deck is nothing but small fry..."

"I remember now!" Chumley slapped his forehead. "I've seen this tactic before! I saw it in the old recordings of the Battle City tournament. It's a favorite strategy of the legendary Seto Kaiba!"

"Eh?" Syrus Truesdale's eyes widened with respect at the name. "The legendary President Kaiba?"

"Oh, so I'm dueling against a legendary combo? This is getting more and more exciting." Jaden grinned even wider. "Then I'll set two cards and end my turn."

"You still have the luxury of being excited? I'll make sure that smile doesn't last long. My turn, draw!"

It was Beta's turn again.

"I activate the spell card, Graceful Charity! I draw three cards from my deck and then discard two cards," Beta announced. "Next, I summon Axe Dragonute!"

[Axe Dragonute, ATK 2000]

"Even though the effect of the Crush Card Virus didn't meet my expectations, your field is still wide open." Beta swept his hand forward. "Axe Dragonute, direct attack!"

Axe Dragonute leaped across Jaden's empty front row, raising its axe to strike Jaden squarely in the head.

"Not so fast! I activate my face-down card: the Quick-Play Spell, The Flute of Summoning Kuriboh!" Jaden shouted. "I special summon Winged Kuriboh from my deck in defense position!"

A small golden flute appeared, and guided by its melody, a Kuriboh with snow-white wings fluttered onto the field to block the path.

Beta frowned. "Fine, then a battle replay occurs. I'll continue the attack on Winged Kuriboh! Small fry like that will go down in one"

"I activate another face-down card!" Jaden interrupted. "The Quick-Play Spell, Transcendent Wings! By discarding two cards from my hand, I evolve the Winged Kuriboh on my field to LV10!"

Jaden sent two cards to the Graveyard, and Winged Kuriboh's white feathers suddenly erupted in a blinding golden light. Angelic feathers drifted through the air as the little creature completed its transformation under the halo of holy light.

[Winged Kuriboh LV10, ATK 300]

"It evolved to Level 10?" Beta began to feel uneasy. "But even at Level 10, its attack is only three hundred..."

"I activate the special effect of LV10! During the opponent's battle phase, by sacrificing this card, all attack position monsters on the opponent's field are destroyed!" Jaden pumped his fist. "And the opponent takes damage equal to the total original attack points of the destroyed monsters!"

"Nani!?"

Beta was horrified. The holy wings erupted with an even more dazzling brilliance, swallowing his front row like a rising sun. Axe Dragonute was utterly powerless against that divine strength, melting into dross and vanishing into the light in a single heartbeat.

"Wuaah!"

A violent burst of energy exploded on Beta's side of the field, sending him tumbling backward. The shockwave radiated outward, catching Jaden's two roommates and knocking them flat on the ground.

[Beta, LP 3150 → LP 1150]

The two who had been blown over looked at each other in shock.

"Is it just me, or did that impact feel a lot stronger than a normal holographic projection?" Syrus asked.

"So it's not just me?" Chumley said uneasily. "I feel like there's something really wrong with this duel."

Covered in dust and looking quite disheveled, Beta scrambled to his feet.

"Damn it..."

He wasn't wrong. This duel utilized military-grade Solid Vision technology, giving it an effect similar to a Shadow Duel. The projections during the match could cause real physical damage.

But the irony was that he had been taking a beating this whole time and was on the verge of collapsing, yet he hadn't even touched his opponent's life points.

If this kept up and he was killed before the other guy even realized the damage was real, it would be a pathetically hilarious way to die.

Beta forced himself to calm down and looked at his hand.

"You can act tough for now," Beta said coldly. "I set two cards and end my turn."

"Go for it, big bro!" Syrus cheered.

Chumley rubbed his chin. "That guy came out acting like he was so powerful. Looking at him now, maybe he's actually pretty weak?"

Beta: "..."

"Whatever the case, I'm going to settle this in one go!" Jaden declared. "My turn, draw!"

Glancing at his hand, he nodded in satisfaction at his consistently stable top-decking and immediately revealed a card. "I play the spell, Legacy of a HERO! When there are two or more Level 4 or higher HERO monsters in my Graveyard, I draw three cards!"

In the manga, this was a powerhouse draw card for the HERO deck, allowing a brutal draw of three cards with simple conditions. Although it was later released as a real card, it had been weakened, requiring the player to return two HERO Fusion monsters from the Graveyard to the deck to draw three. While it tried to stay true to the original effect, its utility was greatly diminished.

"Since you helped me send my Elemental HEROes to the Graveyard earlier, I draw three cards!" Jaden drew his cards.

Beta: "..."

Why does he make it sound like I'm his secret accomplice?

As the three new cards entered his hand, Jaden's eyes lit up.

Avian and Burstinatrix the hardworking couple of the early GX era along with a Polymerization card that seemed glued to them like 502 adhesive.

"Great! Now I can launch a full-scale counterattack!"

Jaden excitedly pulled out Polymerization. "With this, I can summon my favorite monster"

But before he could complete the move, he was cut off. "I activate the Continuous Trap Call of the Haunted! I can revive a monster from my Graveyard in attack position!"

Beta pulled a card as it slid out of his Graveyard slot.

"I revive the monster destroyed last turn... Axe Dragonute!"

[Axe Dragonute, ATK 2000]

"Reviving Axe Dragonute..." Jaden mused.

Two thousand attack points weren't enough to beat his Flame Wingman. Besides, Flame Wingman could inflict damage equal to the attack points of the monster it destroyed in battle. One kick would be enough to end this.

Thus, Jaden didn't stop. "I continue by activating the spell, Polymerization! I fuse Avian and Burstinatrix from my hand!"

"Hmph, you want to use Fusion to transform the low-level monsters left in your deck into high-level HEROes. I've already seen through you."

Beta slowly raised his arm.

"However! My tactics have already evolved beyond what Kaiba used back then. What I'm using now is the complete form of virus destruction, surpassing the original! Behold, the new type of virus developed and upgraded for our new era!"

He swung his hand up, activating another face-down card.

"Chain to the activation of Polymerization, open face-down! Trap card Deck Devastation Virus!"

"I sacrifice a Dark attribute monster with 2000 or more attack points on my field! All monsters with 1500 or less attack points in your hand, on your field, and all cards you draw for the next three turns are destroyed!"
