Chapter 515: I've Been Waiting for You
Back in the present, in the border city of the Syndicate Alliance, the Sinnoh military officer reported to the Champion, "Sir, satellite monitoring shows that Groudon's advance is slower than expected. Could there have been an unforeseen complication in the desert?"
The Champion had initially sneered. "A complication? Hah! You're overthinking it. In this day and age, without an army, what could possibly stop an enraged major Legendary?"
But after a while, he checked the time himself and finally sensed that something was off. "Where is Groudon now, according to the satellite? How far is it from the border? And where is Kuisqi?"
The officer immediately went to confirm, and the news he brought back made the Champion uneasy. "Satellite monitoring shows that Groudon has deviated significantly from our planned route, and it appears to be fighting something. The surveillance has captured large-scale changes to the landscape caused by Groudon's moves."
This news caught the Sinnoh military command completely by surprise. "Something is fighting Groudon? Is it Kuisqi? Get in touch with him. Find out what's going on in the desert!"
"Yes, sir!"
But in reality, the Sinnoh Champion Kuisqi, who was in the desert at that very moment, was just as baffled. "Groudon was drawn away by someone? Are you kidding me?!" He himself didn't dare to get close to the enraged Groudon. He had been having his main Pokémon follow it from a distance, using their psychic abilities to influence it.
He wasn't on the front lines and could only ask his Alolan Raichu and Mr. Mime for information through their telepathic link. His main Raichu was a rare Psychic-type variant, Electric/Psychic, and was much rounder than the more common Raichu. It could ride its tail like a surfboard, making it incredibly agile and maneuverable, perfect for stirring up trouble without getting caught. Kuisqi had always had immense faith in his ace Raichu.
But now, for the first time, he was beginning to wonder if his Raichu had forgotten to take its medication this morning. A single human drawing Groudon away? Are you sure you're not hallucinating?
But with the Alliance's grand plan at stake, he had no choice but to go and see for himself. He threw out another Poké Ball, summoning another rare Pokémon: a Psychic/Fairy-type Galarian Rapidash. Most of Kuisqi's main Pokémon were part Psychic-type. He had studied the type extensively, which was how he was able to influence and provoke Groudon's emotions. In this field, he was truly worthy of his Champion title. Few others could control a major Legendary with mere emotional manipulation.
But he clearly had his blind spots. At least, that was the case when he arrived near the battlefield on his Rapidash and saw Groudon on both knees, panting for breath. His expression was one of complete and utter shock. What... what in the world happened here?! Why is my invincible Groudon kneeling here? There's no sign of any army. What kind of being could have brought an enraged Groudon to its knees without any military support? In that moment, he felt as if his entire worldview had been shattered.
His Raichu's voice came through their telepathic link. "A human and his Pokémon did it."
"What?!" A single human did this? Is this some kind of joke?!
The next moment, through his binoculars, he actually saw a human figure near the battlefield, covered in sand and caked with blood. The man was holding a sword in each hand, and even from a distance, he could feel an overwhelming, murderous aura. It was the first time in his life Kuisqi had ever felt such an intimidating presence from an ordinary human. If you told me that was a human-shaped Legendary, I'd believe you.
But, shock aside, he had not forgotten his mission. "I don't know who you are, or how you accomplished this feat. And honestly, I admire your courage. But unfortunately, for the good of the Alliance, I must ask you to die. Your existence is an obstacle to Sinnoh's greatness!"
Kuisqi was also in his forties, a lifelong bachelor. Perhaps due to his loneliness, he had a habit of muttering to himself. Even as he threw out a Poké Ball and gave a simple assassination order, he couldn't resist a long, dramatic monologue. Fortunately, his Pokémon were used to his talkativeness.
This time, he had sent out a Gallade. After appearing, it hid itself, silently Mega Evolved, and then, with a nod to Kuisqi, used Teleport and vanished. In stark contrast to Kuisqi's personality, his ace Gallade was a silent and cold-blooded assassin. It never asked why, only when, where, and who to kill.
The murderous aura emanating from Arthur was palpable even to Gallade, but it was still confident in its attack. It could see that the human in the distance was on his last legs. A Pokémon's observation was far more detailed than a human's. It saw the uncontrolled trembling of Arthur's muscles, his heavy, labored breathing, and the blood seeping from under the scabs on his torso, staining the waistband of his pants.
This human was strong. Terrifyingly strong. But he was at his limit. A Legendary, especially a major one, was not an opponent to be challenged lightly. This was a respectable opponent. But Gallade had no doubt that it would succeed. It firmly believed that no one, after fighting Groudon for an hour, could possibly withstand its assassination attempt. No one.
The next moment, it saw the human dismount from his Charizard, seemingly to give it some water and medicine. Now is the time. It launched its surprise attack from behind a dune, the blade of its Psycho Cut drawing a straight, deadly line through the air.
But in the next second, in a flash of motion, the human turned his head, raised a sword, and easily parried its Psycho Cut.
"What?!" Gallade was shocked. How can a mere human block my attack?
But what came next was even more shocking. Through the gap between their crossed blades, it saw Arthur look up, a grin spreading across his face as he whispered, "You finally decided to show yourself. I've been waiting for you."
"!!!"
In an instant, a thousand alarms went off in Gallade's mind. It was as if the entire world was screaming at it: DANGER!!
