Chapter 161 - 161. Brutal War

Deep within a valley surrounded by towering rock formations, shinobi from two of the Great Hidden Villages clashed in desperate combat. The battlefield had transformed into a hellscape of blood and smoke, where the acrid scent of burning flesh mixed with the metallic tang of spilled blood.

"Boom! Boom! Boom!"

Explosions echoed through the valley as countless boulders shattered and collapsed. The ground beneath their feet was riddled with craters, each one deep enough to swallow a man whole. Dust clouds rose with every impact, obscuring vision and choking those who breathed too deeply.

The Iwagakure shinobi had chosen their battlefield wisely. Using the natural terrain to their advantage, they maintained a firm upper hand against their enemies. The Konoha forces had organized several desperate charges, attempting to break through the Rock ninja's defensive formations, but each assault had been repelled with devastating efficiency.

From his vantage point on a rocky outcrop, Loess watched with grim satisfaction as his Explosion Corps entered the battlefield. The tide of battle was turning decisively in Iwagakure's favor, and his forces were steadily encircling the Konoha shinobi like a python constricting its prey.

Both villages had deployed their elite jonin for this confrontation. The casualties mounted rapidly as powerful ninjutsu collided with deadly taijutsu exchanges. Bodies littered the ground, some still twitching in their death throes, while others lay motionless in pools of their own blood.

The battlefield had become a graveyard, yet neither side showed any intention of retreating. Every shinobi present shared the same burning determination: defeat the enemy at any cost.

"This isn't looking good," Jiraiya muttered, his experienced eyes tracking the flow of battle with growing concern.

The Toad Sage watched as Konoha's defensive line began to buckle under the relentless assault. His forces were being pushed back, meter by bloody meter, unable to withstand the Rock shinobi's overwhelming offensive.

"Once their Explosion Corps joined the fight, everything changed," he observed grimly. "Their assault is far more intense than we anticipated."

The Explosion Corps represented one of Iwagakure's most feared military assets. This specialized unit consisted of shinobi who either wielded explosive clay with devastating precision or possessed the rare Explosion Release kekkei genkai. Their very presence on a battlefield could shift the balance of power.

Every member of the Explosion Corps had undergone rigorous training to master their destructive abilities. A single attack from these specialists could reduce an ordinary chunin to scattered pieces of flesh and bone. Their jutsu didn't just kill—they obliterated.

When these demolition experts had entered the fray, Konoha's forces immediately began their fighting retreat. The explosive barrage was simply too intense for standard defensive tactics to counter effectively.

Fortunately, Konoha's forces included several shinobi proficient in Lightning Release techniques. They leveraged the elemental advantage of lightning over earth, using their jutsu to neutralize the explosive clay attacks before they could detonate.

Among these lightning users, Hatake Kakashi stood out as particularly lethal. The Copy Ninja combined his Sharingan's predictive abilities with his signature Raikiri technique, cutting through the Explosion Corps' elite jonin with surgical precision. Already, several of their best had fallen to his lightning-wrapped hand.

His effectiveness had not gone unnoticed. Kakashi had become a priority target for the Rock shinobi, and now found himself surrounded by enemies determined to eliminate him. The silver-haired jonin's breathing was labored as he deflected kunai and dodged explosive tags, his chakra reserves depleting rapidly.

Against a single opponent, Kakashi could hold his own against any of Iwagakure's elite jonin. But facing coordinated attacks from multiple enemies, even his considerable skills were being pushed to their limits.

"Fire Release: Ash Pile Burning!"

In the heart of the battlefield, Sarutobi Asuma expelled a cloud of superheated ash from his lungs. The gray smoke engulfed an advancing Rock shinobi, who screamed in agony as the burning particles seared his flesh. A moment later, Asuma ignited the cloud with a spark from his cigarette, and the resulting explosion consumed his enemy completely.

"Haah..." Asuma took a long drag from his cigarette, exhaling a perfect smoke ring despite the chaos around him. "Where the hell is our backup?"

"Chidori!"

Lightning crackled as Kakashi's hand pierced through another Rock shinobi's chest, the enemy's heart stopping instantly. The Copy Ninja pulled his blood-soaked hand free and moved to stand back-to-back with Asuma. Together, they faced thirteen Rock shinobi who had formed a circle around them.

Lightning chakra still dancing across his palm, Kakashi's visible eye showed his exhaustion. His breathing came in short gasps as he replied, "Who knows? To avoid detection by their sensory teams, Guy's unit had to position themselves pretty far from here."

"They'd better hurry," Asuma growled, flicking ash from his cigarette. "I'm running on fumes here."

The bearded jonin's arms trembled with fatigue. He had already killed more enemies than he could count, and his muscles burned from the constant exertion. Yet the Rock shinobi kept coming, an endless tide of hostile faces and deadly jutsu.

The two Konoha jonin prepared for another assault when suddenly—

"Morning Peacock!"

A blur of green erupted onto the battlefield as fresh Konoha reinforcements finally arrived. Might Guy had opened the Sixth Gate of the Eight Inner Gates Formation, his body radiating intense green chakra. He launched a devastating barrage of air pressure punches, each strike creating fireballs that rained down upon the Rock shinobi like a peacock's magnificent plumage.

The enemy formation shattered under the assault, shinobi thrown in all directions by the shockwaves.

"BOOM!"

Guy landed beside his eternal rival and Asuma, his trademark enthusiasm undimmed by the surrounding carnage. "Kakashi! Are you alright? Oh, Asuma, you're here too!"

"Yeah, I'm here too," Asuma replied dryly, his cigarette bobbing as he spoke. "Thanks for noticing."

It was a minor miracle that Guy, whose attention usually focused solely on Kakashi, had even acknowledged his presence. But Asuma's sarcasm quickly gave way to a genuine smile as he spotted a familiar figure among the reinforcements.

Kurenai Yuhi had arrived with Guy's unit, and Asuma watched with poorly concealed pride as the genjutsu mistress effortlessly dispatched a Rock shinobi with her illusions.

With reinforcements bolstering their lines, Kakashi finally had a moment to assess the broader battlefield. What he saw troubled him deeply. Despite Guy's dramatic entrance and the addition of fresh troops, Konoha's situation had only marginally improved.

The reinforcements had halted their retreat, true, but they had merely achieved a stalemate. The Rock shinobi still held the advantage, and victory seemed as distant as ever.

At the Iwagakure command post, Loess surveyed the battlefield with calm satisfaction. "Did they really think we wouldn't notice their little deception? Some of their forces disappeared before the battle, hoping to catch us off guard. How naive."

The two villages had been locked in conflict for months now. Both sides had memorized their enemy's roster, particularly the elite jonin who could single-handedly turn battles. When shinobi of Might Guy's caliber suddenly vanished from Konoha's ranks, Iwagakure's intelligence network had immediately taken notice.

"These aren't reinforcements from Konoha itself," Loess continued, addressing his subordinates. "This is merely their reserve force trying to ambush us. Even with them on the field, the outcome remains unchanged."

The son of the Third Tsuchikage stood atop his rocky perch like a general of old, his tactical mind constantly analyzing the ebb and flow of combat below. "Iwagakure has never feared a battle of attrition. We have always had superior numbers!"

His voice carried the weight of command as he issued his next orders. "Tell all units to prepare for deployment. In thirty minutes, we commit our remaining forces to the field!"

"Our objective is clear: crush the Konoha forces completely and drive these invaders back to the Land of Fire!"

"Yes, sir!" His subordinates scattered to relay the commands.

The battle intensified as both sides threw everything into the conflict. Ninjutsu of every element lit up the valley—fire dragons clashed with stone walls, lightning bolts shattered earth spears, and water torrents doused explosive blasts. But as the fighting dragged on, exhaustion began to take its toll. Chakra reserves dwindled, movements became sluggish, and the pace of combat gradually slowed.

Then, just when Konoha's forces thought they had stabilized their position—

"BOOM!"

The ground behind Konoha's lines suddenly erupted. Massive sections of earth collapsed inward, revealing hidden tunnels from which fresh Rock shinobi emerged. The Leaf ninja found themselves caught in a perfectly executed pincer movement, enemies attacking from both front and rear.

"Earth Release: Swamp of the Underworld!"

At this critical moment, Jiraiya finally entered the battle personally. The Toad Sage's hands flew through seals before slamming onto the ground. Instantly, the solid earth beneath the emerging Rock shinobi transformed into a viscous, muddy swamp. Dozens of enemies found themselves trapped, sinking into the mire that clung to their bodies like quicksand.

"Fire Release: Flame Dragon Bomb!"

Not wasting a second, Jiraiya followed up with a devastating fire technique. A massive dragon of pure flame erupted from his mouth, its heat so intense that the very air shimmered and warped. The dragon descended upon the trapped Rock shinobi with a roar that sounded almost alive.

The temperature spiked to hellish levels. Water in the air instantly vaporized into steam, and the muddy swamp baked into hardened clay within seconds. Deep cracks spider-webbed across the dried earth like scars on the land itself.

Yet Jiraiya's expression remained grim. As the flames dissipated and the smoke cleared, he saw that his attack had claimed fewer lives than hoped. Only a handful of Rock shinobi had perished in the inferno.

The majority had escaped, using their mastery of Earth Release to burrow beneath the swamp like fish swimming through water. They emerged from the ground at safe distances, ready to continue fighting.

"Damn it," Jiraiya cursed under his breath. "I forgot these bastards are Earth Release specialists!"

The Sannin prepared to launch another attack, but his window of opportunity had closed. Loess had witnessed Jiraiya's entrance and immediately moved to intercept. The massive jonin charged across the battlefield, earth chakra surging around his body.

The commanders of both armies were about to clash directly.

As Jiraiya and Loess met in explosive combat, the battle reached new heights of brutality. The valley had become a canvas painted in crimson, where desperate shinobi fought not for glory or honor, but for simple survival. Each side knew that defeat here could mean the end of their village's ambitions in this war.

The clash of titans had begun, and only blood would determine the victor.
