Chapter 237: A Simple Phone
Every student who received an admission letter was also provided with a personal phone.
This device, however, was more akin to a miniature computer. At present, it had only two core functions: communication and access to the White Cloud City network for data retrieval nothing more.
In essence, it served as a basic communication tool and a library.
Users could search for various types of information, though confidential or advanced materials required special authorization.
Standard students lacked the clearance to access such high level data only the senior members of White Cloud City's administration could retrieve classified content.
Initially, Ye Cheng had considered adding more functions such as a camera, audio recording, roaming capabilities, and other features.
However, he ultimately discarded the idea for several reasons:
The current network infrastructure was too underdeveloped to support advanced functions.Storage and operational capacity within these early stage devices was extremely limited.Distractions could hinder student focus if the phone was too entertaining, it might affect their studies.
Considering all these factors, Ye Cheng stripped the device down to its essential features, leaving only basic communication and research tools.
Despite its simplicity, this newly introduced technology was nothing short of a miracle to students who had never encountered anything like it before.
To them, this device was as shocking as an airplane would be to a primitive society.
"So, this thing is called… a phone?"
Hu Liena examined the rectangular, flat object in her hands.
Its sleek metallic body and smooth crystal screen gave it a refined, high end appearance far more sophisticated than any Soul Guidance device she had ever seen.
(It was essentially a modern touchscreen smartphone in every way.)
This phone came packaged in an elegant box, complete with a small instruction manual.
Holding both the manual and the phone, Hu Liena began following the setup guide, cautiously testing its features.
"First, infuse soul power."
She followed the instructions, channeling her soul power into the phone.
Instantly, she felt a slight vibration in her hands.
In the next moment, the previously dim crystal screen lit up, accompanied by a gentle startup melody.
The unexpected reaction startled Hu Liena she nearly threw the device away but managed to restrain herself in time.
"So… it really is a Soul Guidance tool?"
She knew about Soul Guidance artifacts, though she had never seen anything like this before.
Indeed, this phone was a type of Soul Guidance device just one far more advanced than anything available on the continent.
A Mechanized Voice Spoke:
[Soul power successfully bound. Please enter your personal information. Warning! You must provide authentic data. Any false information will result in device confiscation and possible expulsion from the academy.]
This Soul Guidance phone, though similar in function to a modern smartphone, was fundamentally different in design.
For instance, it was entirely powered by soul energy there were no batteries, no need for charging stations, and no electricity involved.
Instead, the device had an internal recognition system that registered the first soul power input as its owner's.
From then on, only that specific soul power signature could operate it no one else could use it.
Additionally, every action turning it on, searching for information, making calls required direct soul power infusion.
If the user stopped supplying energy, the device ceased functioning immediately.
In other words, non soul masters couldn't use it at all.
Entering Her Information
Hu Liena, still fascinated by this new gadget, continued following the instructions.
After several minutes of trial and error, she successfully input her personal data.
The registration required basic details, such as:
Full NameGenderAgeCurrent Soul Power LevelInnate Soul Power RankMartial SoulAffiliated Organization
Since none of this information was particularly sensitive, Hu Liena honestly filled in the required fields.
She dared not lie, as the manual explicitly warned against falsified data violations could result in expulsion.
After completing the registration, the phone's main interface appeared.
The Simplistic User Interface
The screen was incredibly minimalistic, displaying only two core features:
[Search Function] – Access to White Cloud City's database for research.[Communication] – A direct messaging and calling system.
Hu Liena learned from the manual that each phone was assigned a unique number.
By entering another user's code, one could instantly connect and communicate as long as both were within White Cloud City's network range.
Even if separated by great distances within the city, users could talk in real time.
A Devious Thought
Hu Liena's eyes flickered with excitement.
"If my teacher also has one of these, wouldn't that mean I could communicate with her anytime?"
Moreover, this communication tool would make it much easier to relay covert intelligence back to Spirit Hall.
However, her excitement quickly faded upon rereading the manual's limitations
The device only functioned within White Cloud City.
Once outside, it became a useless brick.
"Nana! This thing is amazing!"
Just then, Yan rushed over, grinning ear to ear.
"Let me add your number!" he said enthusiastically. "Now, I can contact you anytime!"
Hu Liena's expression froze.
'Who wants to be contacted by you all the time?!' she thought bitterly.
But on the surface, she forced a polite smile and replied, "Sure. Let's exchange numbers."
She then glanced at Xie Yue and said, "Brother, you should join too."
"Alright, coming."
Xie Yue, who had also just figured out the phone's basic features, walked over and joined them.
Setting Up Their Contacts
The three huddled together, navigating the user interface with clumsy fingers.
After a few minutes of trial and error, they successfully added each other's numbers.
Each contact was saved with their respective names, making future communication effortless.
Yan's Excitement
Holding his newly registered phone, Yan beamed with excitement.
"This is amazing! We can stay in touch whenever we want!"
In his mind, he was already imagining late night calls whispering sweet words to Hu Liena while she gently said goodnight.
Falling asleep to her soft voice, with a smile of satisfaction on his face…
It would be paradise.
Hu Liena's Annoyance
Hu Liena, however, felt a chill run down her spine.
She suddenly realized a major problem now that Yan had her number, he would constantly harass her with calls.
'Ugh… this is going to be annoying.'
She had always found Yan's obsessive behavior irritating, but since they were teammates, she couldn't be too blunt with him.
Then, something from the manual came to mind
There was a 'block' function.
Hu Liena's eyes lit up.
"I should definitely test that feature."
