CESAR
I had gone outside to the car and waited for Casey.
I had already sent her a message, so she should be here any time now.
As the driver opened the door for me, I got in. My phone pinged. I got in, opened the phone, and it was a message from Casey. I don't know what I was expecting, but seeing a message from her had made me smile. It had actually made me fucking smile.
I opened it—only for her to tell me that she'd gone to see a friend of hers and I shouldn't wait up.
She actually told me: Don't wait up. I couldn't help it, I read the message again, just to be sure I had read it right.
> Hey, something came up.
She called me hey, as if I were some stranger.
Some friend who meant nothing.
> Something came up. A friend is back in town. I need to go see her.
A friend? What fucking friend?
I don't know any friends of hers. She's never told me she has any kind of friend in the city. Except for Leanna, of course.
Is that who she's talking about?
