Riven's Pov
The best part about living was tempting fate. And nothing tempted fate quite like running my mouth in front of the Alpha King.
Lucian sat at the head of the table, golden eyes fixed on us like we were three misbehaving pups. Caius was tense beside me, shoulders stiff, while Miri looked like she was already bracing for whatever idiocy I was about to spew. Smart girl. Because naturally, I opened my mouth.
"You know, I was just thinking about how unfair you are, Your Majesty," I began, lazily propping my chin in my hand. "You kept us locked down like prisoners the first month after finding out we were mates. Separate rooms, half a fortress between us—hell, I was surprised you didn't have guards stationed outside our doors. And then you almost killed me the morning after we finally managed to—well, you know."
Lucian's gaze sharpened, and Caius let out a strangled cough that was more warning than accident.
But I was committed.
