Chapter 147 - Chapter 147: Little One

Long before Silas discovered the Trapinch, the surveillance staff had already spotted it and immediately reported it to their supervisor.

A Dragon-type Pokémon specifically the offspring of a Vibrava appearing here was no small matter. On a larger scale, it was a serious oversight on their part.

"You idiots! What did I tell you? Check on schedule and at designated locations every day! Did you do it?

That's a Trapinch! Not a Durant!

Someone tell me—how the hell has it been living in there?

None of you noticed it? What does the League even pay you people for?!"

The supervisor's face turned red as he shouted at his subordinates.

"Sir, here's the information on the Trainer,"

An employee rushed in from outside, holding a file in hand.

Still fuming, the supervisor snatched it from him. "Let me tell you this—Trapinch being captured isn't a big deal. The kid caught it legally.

Besides, for the League, having one more powerful Trainer is a good thing.

But you not discovering it in the first place—that's your negligence. Everyone responsible for the rocky area—I want detailed reports and inspections on my desk tonight. Extremely detailed.

I'm going to report this to the League. And not just you lot I'll be held accountable too."

Grumbling, he flipped through Silas' file, only to curse under his breath damn, can't even rope him in. The kid's connections are way stronger than theirs.

Snapping the folder shut, he resumed scolding the staff, while they could only respond with helpless expressions.

Trapinch's survival habits included building bowl-shaped, inescapable pits and waiting inside for prey to fall in. It could stay underground for extended periods—going a week without water was no big deal.

Unless you were freakishly lucky and it came out on its own like now finding it without knowing was like searching for a needle in a haystack.

Not to mention, the rocky and desert zones were riddled with caves. Who knew what was hiding inside?

Their supervisor was usually reasonable, but this time the rare nature of the Trapinch had pushed him over the edge. Anyone forced to take the blame wouldn't be in a good mood either.

"Alright, Jay, calm down."

An elderly voice called out.

"Director!" the employees greeted him respectfully. It was Baoba, the warden of the Safari Zone, who had been called in by the supervisor.

Jay turned toward the Slowpoke-looking Baoba and confessed frankly, "I'm sorry, Director. This was a failure on our part.

I'll submit a detailed report to both you and the League for review. Additionally, I'd like to offer my resignation as a sign of accountability."

"No need to go that far, Jay." Baoba shook his head. Who could've predicted something like this? If it were any other rare Pokémon, it would've been discovered by now. But this was Trapinch.

"Besides, it's still uncertain whether the kid can even catch that Trapinch."

Baoba looked at the monitor displaying a boy and a Pokémon facing off.

Everyone instinctively nodded in agreement. Right Trapinch was an extremely aggressive Pokémon with strong territorial instincts. Since no one had spotted it before, that meant no one had even tried to approach or tame it.

If someone entered its territory uninvited, it'd be a death sentence.

"Send out a Guardian squad to the location. Don't interfere—just stand by.

If he catches it, withdraw. If he doesn't, capture it ourselves."

The supervisor wasted no time issuing orders. Frankly, he didn't care if Silas succeeded. Ideally, he wouldn't—then they'd just get a stern warning at most and still keep their jobs.

Everyone's gaze returned to the screen, silently hoping for the best.

Meanwhile, things were a little awkward for Silas. Every time he got close, Trapinch would open its massive jaws and threaten him.

Sure, his body was strong enough to rival a level 15 Pokémon, but battles weren't just about strength. Going toe-to-toe with a wild Pokémon was still way out of his league.

As for giving up? Absolutely not.

Vibrava, known as the "Desert Spirit," got its name from the way its wings produced a sound that resembled a woman's enchanting song. It was even known as the "King of the Desert."

The sound of its wings could mesmerize opponents—one of its greatest assets.

By flapping its wings, it could kick up desert sands and hide its body. In the wild, it often partnered with Krokorok to hunt prey.

Its red, domed eyes prevented sand from getting in just imagining how it would sync up with his Boldore was enough to make Silas excited.

There was no way he'd give up now. Sure, raising Dragon-types was expensive but he'd just rack up debt and pay it off later.

It wasn't every day you ran into a Dragon-type Pokémon.

From his backpack, he pulled out an energy cube carefully prepared in advance for Ground-type Pokémon, with their favorite flavor.

As a Trainer, even if he didn't plan on catching anything, he always came prepared and now that preparation was finally paying off.

Cautiously, he tossed the cube toward Trapinch.

Trapinch, busy digging a hole, kept one eye on the human nearby. From the moment it was born, instinct told it these creatures were bad news.

Wait... What's that? A yellowish cube? Smells... really good.

Huh? Why's he tossing it toward me?

Sniff... Sniff... Smells amazing.

Trapinch couldn't help but drool a little. It hadn't had a proper meal in days—just dirt and sand.

Luckily, there were no predators like Sandile in this area that hunted it. That's why it dared to venture out into the open.

Yes, while its final evolution Krokorok and Vibrava worked well together in adulthood, young Sandile often preyed on Trapinch.

Their tactic? Attacking while Trapinch was flipped over—its oversized jaws made it hard to get up once toppled.

Trapinch casually shuffled a few steps toward the energy cube Silas had tossed.

Silas was overjoyed inside—yes, that's it!and quickly backed away a few steps to appear non-threatening.

Trapinch tilted its head. This human... didn't seem so bad.

With a little happy wiggle, it moved closer to the cube, then stared at Silas.

In response, Silas decisively backed up a few more meters.

Satisfied, Trapinch wagged its head, then bit into the cube.

Oh! The taste of Pokémon cuisine!

The energy cube's gritty texture burst in its mouth like magic. Trapinch swore it had never eaten anything this delicious in its entire life.

Still made from ground-based nutrients but a million times better than dirt and rocks.

Thump-thump.

This time, three small cylindrical brown pellets—resembling mixed meat bites hit the ground.

They were standard Pokémon food. After all, energy cubes couldn't be fed in excess—they filled a Pokémon up quickly. If you gave too much and the Pokémon ran away, it'd be a real loss.

Trapinch waddled forward to sniff them. Not bad though they didn't smell nearly as fragrant as the yellow cube from earlier.

Still, they were from that kind human. Probably pretty tasty, right? With that thought, it swallowed the three pellets in one gulp.

Mmm... yeah, not as yummy as the yellow one—but there was more.

Even with its tiny brain, Trapinch could tell the difference between one and three.

In its simple logic, it made sense that the tastier something was, the less of it you'd get. Otherwise, why would it be eating dirt every day?

Silas tossed another three food pellets—but this time, a little closer to himself.

Trapinch happily inched its way toward Silas.

His heart beat faster with growing excitement.

Suddenly, his hand froze. His eyes narrowed. This was...?

Without changing his expression, Silas calmly scanned the surroundings. His perception told him five or six people had suddenly appeared nearby.

People from the Safari Zone staff? But weren't they way too late?

Silas had been ready for this from the start. After all, a Pokémon like Trapinch would definitely be on the facility's registry.

There was no way a rare Pokémon like that would be roaming freely without oversight.

He'd even once suspected that the area where he encountered that Dratini had watchers too. Now, it seemed he had guessed correctly.

His original plan was to capture the Trapinch before anyone showed up. After all, as long as he didn't use force, they had no grounds for complaint. But now…

Silas looked at the Trapinch, still seven or eight meters away, and cursed under his breath. Damn. If only he hadn't kept so much distance.

Trapinch stared blankly at the human not far off. What the heck? Weren't you gonna feed me? I'm still hungry!

Silas decisively withdrew his feeding hand. Since they were here, there was no longer any point. Provoking the Safari Zone was a very unwise move.

Even though it was possible the staff wouldn't stop him, it just wasn't worth the risk. There would be more chances in the future.

He turned and walked away.

Trapinch was even more stunned. Wait, what? You're just leaving... like that?

Silas's figure disappeared into the distance. Behind a nearby boulder, a man dressed like a squad leader gave an order through his radio

"Move in. Capture the Trapinch."

He wasn't sure why the Trainer had suddenly stopped, but that wasn't his concern. His orders were clear. The Trainer's motives weren't his problem.

Inside the monitoring room, Warden Baoba who had been calm until now wore a dark expression. The supervisor looked like he was about to fall apart.

"This is your 'elite team that absolutely won't be spotted'?" Baobab squinted at the supervisor coldly.

"They barely even got close, and the Trainer noticed them immediately and backed off.

This is a hundred times more serious than if he'd caught the Trapinch! What do you think people will say about us?!"

Baoba was absolutely furious now. When Trapinch had first gone unnoticed, he hadn't even gotten angry.

But this?

Supervisor Jay trembled all over half with rage, half with despair.

Rage—at those idiots in Guardian Team One. They actually got spotted?! Just like Baoba said, this was far more serious than losing the Trapinch.

Didn't they claim to have trained in stealth under Officer Jenny? This was stealth? Seriously?

Despair because his job was as good as gone.

"Reporting, Supervisor! Reporting, Warden! Mission complete!"

The door burst open. The squad leader of Team One saluted, holding a Poké Ball that contained Trapinch.

But instead of praise, he received only the Supervisor's glare filled with the desire to chew him out and the Warden's cold, turned back.

"Jay. Prepare yourself."

Back to Silas.

He had already crossed the river section and arrived at the final mixed zone.

He was disappointed that he hadn't caught the Trapinch, but it wasn't exactly unexpected. The only surprise was that the staff reacted more slowly than he had imagined.

Probably due to the distance. Silas figured, yeah that made sense. From the entrance to this area, it would take over an hour of walking. Even if they were quick, it would still take time.

And if they suddenly used tech transport inside the zone, the wild Pokémon would go berserk.

"Little one, you've got to be careful, alright?"

Silas carefully bandaged the small Pokémon in front of him.
