Heather stepped out of her car, one foot still midair as she balanced her bag on her shoulder. She leaned back slightly toward the window and spoke to her son.
"Okay, baby. Mommy's going to see someone. Don't follow me. Just stay here and keep watching your space video, alright?"
Alex gave a small nod. His headphones were still tucked into his ears, the glowing screen reflecting on his little face. He was so focused on the cartoon rocket ships that Heather wasn't even sure he heard her.
She shut the door gently and pressed the lock on her key fob. The car chirped back at her. She wasn't worried her five year old was locked in her car.
The hospital grounds were secure, cameras everywhere, and her car had enough built-in protection that anyone trying to force their way inside would set off a shrieking alarm and send an alert straight to her phone.
Plus, no one would know a child is inside, since the car windows are tinted.
