Chapter 21 - 21. An opportunity

"Your majesty," Evans' voice cut through the little tension that was starting to grow between them, and Edith nearly let out a visible sigh of relief.

Turning, they both looked at waiting for his next set of words, which didn't take long.

"You have a guest, your Majesty," Evans said, and Davion frowned. Understanding the unspoken words of his master, Evans wasted no time and added, "Duke Lorret is here. I have tried sending him away, but he has proved to be quite stubborn and insistent on meeting you in person."

"Very well," he said with a nod and a tired sigh. "Let him know I will be there shortly," Evans bowed his head and left to dele8ver the message while Davion turned his attention back to Edith.

Edith swallowed her saliva, remembering what she had just said about just a moment ago.

"I didn't mean to offend you in any way, I swear…" she quickly said but was interrupted by him as if it didn't matter at all.

"That is irrelevant," he said, and she blinked. "It seems this is the end of our little lesson, and since you are still unable to fully grasp how it works, I will assist you this time."

"What?" calling hom a bad ruler was irrelevant to him? The fact that he didn't even look the slightest bit offended left her truly baffled, too.

"I said I would help you with the spell. A little pest has come to my little nest and has refused to leave, I should go and see what it is up to, shouldn't I?" He said with his tilted sideways.

Edith let out a breath, not sure how to react to that. Following the human tradition and its nobility and ranking, a duke was one of the highest ranks beside that of the king, yet he called one 'a little pest'. Did he dislike the duke that much?

"Yes, you should. It is important to get rid of the pests before the home gets infested by them," she said and saw him smirk.

"It's a shame," Davion voice came, sounding rather disappointed. "I quite like you like this," he stepped closer, picking a few stray strands of her haid and tugging them behind her ear.

Edith heard her skip. Their proximity making her feel even more conscious of herself.

"I suppose we can't have everyone seeing you like this," their eyes locked, although ut was just for a moment, it felt so long. "Shall we begin?" He asked, and Edith nodded her head.

It didn't long when she felt the same whay as when her mother had cast the spell on her. Within seconds, he stepped back.

"It is done," she said. Edith pursed her lips at how easy he made look when she got wrong after so many tries. "You will get eventually if you keep practicing. Come to me if you require any guidance. I will be more than happy to assist you."

"Thank you, your Majesty. I will keep practicing as you have advised," she said and stepped aside for him to pass.

Davion nodded his head and took his ateps to leave but halted when she called.

"Your majesty," he looked over his shoulder without turning to face her.

"I would like to take a walk outside the palace walls. Is that allowed of your guests?" She asked, and he nodded. "I won't take any escorts with me either. I want to know the people here, on my own, without anyone knowing I am your guest."

Davion finally turned and looked at her. He could tell there was much to it than just her wanting to go on a walk. "Do you mind if I accompany you. I won't get in your way, and I can promise you that no one will recognize me," he suggested.

Edith felt hesitant, but she eventually nodded, "Thay is fine by me," she said, and he smiled.

"We will leave at sunset. I here it is quite beautiful when you watch it with someone other yourself," Davion said and proceeded forward only to stop and looked behind. "And… don't worry about your maids. They will not remember ever seeing you as you were. So expect everything to go back to normal by the time you return inside."

With that said, he didn't stop again and walked inside.

Edith let out a laugh at how casually he said. He just messed with people's minds and memories like it was nothing.

"I supposed I should be grateful, right?" She said to herself.

She had heard many things about and many fascinated her while others just seemed rather exergerated. When she first met him, she thought he was crazy with screws loosed in her head, but the more she got to know him, the more he felt humane, vulnerable even. But now, she didn't even know where to place him.

Was the mind so simple to manipulate?

Meanwhile, Davion walked the halls, his expression cold. His demeanor was completely different from when he was with Edith in the garden. His crimson orbs appeared even redder, like flames ready consume whoever gets on his nerves.

"Where is he?" He asked as soon as Evans came into view.

"In your study," he replied and followed behind him, but close enough to carry out a little conversation. "I believe he is here concerning the banquet. They must have it was sudden, so we can expect many more like him to take advantage of that to come pay a visit. And…" he stopped, and so did Davion.

He looked his shoulder with the corner of his eyes, and that was enough warning to not keep him waiting.

Understanding the meaning behind his gaze, Evans cleared his throat. What he was about to say had been dubbed a taboo before Davion, but he knew he had to say because it was part of the reason why Duke Lorret was here.

"I believe he is also here co corning his daughter, your Majesty…." The air around suddenly dropped, and Evans stilled, but he diny stopped and continued knowing Davion's anger wasn't directed at him. At least nit this time. "This banquet is a first in a long time in Arowyn, and no one will miss the opportunity to introduce their daughters to you."
