Lily Turner thought the uncle and nephew might have something important to discuss, so she left the living room and went upstairs alone.
Michael Linton hadn't said a word earlier because he was secretly observing Lily the whole time. His efforts were not in vain as he noticed some unusual reactions from her.
"Why did you two come back? Don't use excuses to brush me off." He glanced towards the living room door to make sure the two who had left were out of sight before he asked the question that weighed on his mind.
"She had some unpleasantness with her mother."
When Easton Holmes was stopped by Michael Linton earlier, he realized his uncle wanted to ask him something. Their sudden return would certainly arouse suspicion, as his uncle wasn't as easy to fool as his grandfather.
