I waited by the door, standing for what felt like forever. My legs grew weak, but I couldn't walk away. Karl didn't open the door. He didn't say a word. That silence was tearing me apart. When I couldn't stand any longer, I leaned against the wall and slid down until I was sitting on the cold floor, hoping… praying he would open the door and look at me. But he didn't.
The guards kept glancing at me. Their eyes said what their mouths didn't—he wasn't going to come out. I saw the pity in their faces. They had already given up, but I couldn't. I still believed he would open that door. Maybe not now, but soon.
"My lady, you're still here?" Marissa's voice pulled me from my thoughts. She looked from me to the guards with disapproval, as if she had asked them to take care of me and they failed.
"What a shame," she said sharply to them. "You just stood here watching her."
