~Katrina~
"Karl?" I called out, hoping he'd hear me. If he was in danger, maybe he'd make a sound to let me know. But then again, what kind of danger could Karl not handle? And if he couldn't, then what chance did I have?
Still, I chose the left path that led deeper into the woods. My voice trembled slightly as I called again, "Karl, where are—"
I stopped. My voice caught in my throat.
There he was. Standing all alone in the clearing, his back turned to me. But he wasn't still. His lips were moving. He was talking. But to who? There was no one else there.
"Karl?" I called, louder this time.
He heard me. I saw the way his body tensed, but he didn't turn right away. When he finally did, he looked surprised to see me. He quickly covered it with a smile, but I noticed the stiffness in his expression.
"Katrina? What are you doing out here?"
