Chapter 579 - Chapter 579: We're at a Disadvantage

After leaving Kamar-Taj, Noah returned directly to the London Sanctum.

This trip had been unexpectedly rewarding.

He now understood his mentor's true attitude toward Kaecilius.

And more importantly, he finally understood what Dormammu actually represented.

Put bluntly, Dormammu was a tool.

From the very beginning-used by the Ancient One to strengthen herself.

Later, Noah used that same power to complete Dragonborn magic.

And with a small trick, Dormammu had been reduced even further.

A power bank.

Now, that power bank was resisting.

Struggling against those who exploited it.

But in reality?

Nothing had changed.

Dormammu's arrival wouldn't overturn anything.

On the contrary, it would only increase a planet's-or even a universe's-deterrence.

Honestly, Noah didn't know why he felt this strange sense of pity toward Dormammu.

Almost as if the guy were... a good person.

He rubbed his chin, then shook his head.

That thought was ridiculous.

Dormammu wasn't pitiful.

He wasn't good.

The innocent souls consumed by him-entire planets, entire universes-could probably fill this world many times over.

At best, one could say this version of Dormammu had met the wrong people in the wrong universe.

In another world, he would bare his fangs immediately and show what true darkness really meant.

As far as Noah was concerned, the matter of Dormammu was over.

There was already a conclusion.

He felt some regret for Kaecilius.

Just as the Ancient One said, Kaecilius's talent was frighteningly high.

And his will was firm to the extreme.

If he had chosen the right path, his achievements would not have been inferior to Strange's.

"It's a pity resurrection isn't that simple," Noah sighed.

"No Darkhold. No resurrection spells. Even reanimating a corpse is difficult."

So far, the only method he'd seen was Voldemort's.

But that didn't count.

That method was closer to soul-splitting.

He hadn't truly died.

In Noah's eyes, that wasn't resurrection in the strict sense.

As for other methods?

None came to mind.

At one point, Noah even considered going to Japan.

"...Forget it." He shook his head. "Thinking about this is pointless."

Compared to souls, there was a more pressing matter.

His light power.

For now, his only hope lay in unknown parallel universes.

Letting go of those thoughts, Noah allowed himself to relax.

Something more amusing came to mind.

Strange-now Sherlock Holmes-had actually found Everett.

A real John Watson.

That hadn't been planned at all.

This world was strange enough as it was, but forcibly assembling two sets of Holmes and Watson should've been impossible.

And yet.

They formed a pair anyway.

Noah couldn't help but feel amused.

And a little curious.

What kind of sparks would those two create?

"Speaking of which..." Noah tilted his head.

"What role do I play here?"

"Mycroft? Eurus?"

He paused.

"Definitely not Moriarty."

Then another thought surfaced.

"In Tony's version of Holmes... Irene Adler is Christine Palmer?"

Noah smiled.

Dropping Strange into that setting really had been the right call.

If he had the time, he wouldn't mind observing their daily lives.

"-Noah?"

A knock came from the office door.

"You in there?"

"Yes, Avril." Noah recognized the voice immediately. "What's wrong?"

"If you're talking about people, nothing," Mrs. Haven replied after a pause.

"But if you mean those little creatures you keep..."

"There might be a problem."

"...What now?" Noah stood up, walking toward the door. "What happened?"

"Hedwig caught Gugu."

"What?" Noah's expression changed instantly. "Is my owl still alive?"

"She is," Avril said calmly. "But she's lying on the floor, not daring to move. Looks terrified."

"...Damn it."

"How did that idiot bird even get caught?"

Tony sat in his office, staring at streams of experimental data while calculating silently.

The computer was fast.

But his brain wasn't slow either.

During this period, Tony had even begun analyzing the formula of Pym Particles.

He hadn't wanted to.

But he had no choice.

Steve and Bucky had only brought him three test tubes.

That wasn't enough for anything meaningful.

So Tony did what he always did.

He figured it out himself.

Reverse-engineering the particles gave him an astonishing amount of information.

He had basically confirmed how to enter parallel universes through the quantum realm.

"The problem is..." Tony stared at the watch-shaped device on the desk.

"I still don't have test subjects."

And annoyingly enough, he'd been inspired by others.

By that thing.

No matter how irritated he felt, Tony had to admit it.

His counterpart from another universe had influenced him.

That device alone had sparked countless follow-up ideas.

Still, he didn't dwell on it.

He had completed the theory.

Parallel universe travel.

Time traversal.

That alone was worth celebrating.

Tony had been in a dark place lately-locked in the lab, barely seeing daylight.

He shook his head and spoke.

"Jarvis. Any news outside?"

"Define 'news,' sir," Jarvis replied immediately.

"During your time in the lab, Ms. Potts has sent you two hundred and fifty-four messages."

"...Filter out anything scolding me," Tony groaned.

"And the rest?"

"Avengers. Noah. S.W.O.R.D. Anything."

Tony didn't want to see Pepper yelling at him.

What he wanted was to know the overall situation.

He knew what he was doing was extreme.

He didn't care much about public opinion.

But he didn't want things with the Avengers to collapse before this was settled.

Unfortunately, reality had other plans.

"You should prepare yourself mentally, sir," Jarvis said calmly.

"It appears some individuals have deduced that you are behind the Pym Particle theft."

"...Huh?" Tony frowned. Surprised, but not panicked.

"Who figured it out? Or who leaked it?"

"Maria Hill was the first to notice inconsistencies," Jarvis replied.

"She informed Nick Fury. Several Avengers reached similar conclusions."

"My actions?" Tony tilted his head-then understood.

He'd isolated himself completely.

Locked in the lab.

Unreachable.

That alone screamed research.

And what had happened right before that?

The Pym Particle theft.

Tony hadn't been present that night, but everyone knew that if he wanted to investigate, he could've found something.

Instead, he'd ignored it.

At first, they blamed his history with Hank Pym.

But his subsequent behavior made another conclusion far more likely.

Tony Stark was the inside man.

With accomplices.

Steve Rogers.

James Barnes.

Steve's recent behavior was telling.

Avoidant. Guilty.

Not the Captain America they knew.

And Bucky?

He'd never let Steve act alone.

"So..." Tony rubbed his chin.

"I'm the most unforgivable one now?"

"More or less," Jarvis replied. "However, you still have supporters."

"Oh?" Tony raised an eyebrow. "Who?"

"Colonel James Rhodes. And Dr. Bruce Banner. Both believe that either you didn't do it-or that you had sufficient justification."

"...Banner?" Tony laughed softly.

"Didn't expect that."

"Three against six," he said calmly.

"Looks like we're at a disadvantage."

"Yes, sir."
